After seeing TimAnderson's Bedpost Banjo, I had the idea to make one out of what else, an Altoid tin. The guitar sounds quite mandolin-ish, besides the two stings that are on it, I might even (when i get the chance) I might put in an electric pick-up in it. If you have any questions about the guitar feel free to ask, I might even make a whole instructable on it. Thanks for your time, comments are appreciated.

Please make an instructable on this. I want to make one for my son but not smart enough to do it from pictures...

Thanks for this. My son has to make a musical instrument for a school project and this is perfect.

Looks pretty easy to me,I bet I can make one with a Pokemon tin I don't need,I just need to cut out the plastic window, and use that as a sound hole
I'm to lazy to make a tuning peg thing,I'll just go buy some wood and strings,I'll make a instructable in about an hour

the part at the altoid tin end holding the strings; is it connected to the altoid container or to the ruler and does it matter? Is the tin just glued to the ruler?
cool i made one to after seeing this ( it only had 1 string tho :(

what's the nut?
tdolasky pmac932 years ago
i believe it is a sliding marker that is seldom included in some rulers. he must have adhered it in place
The nut is the small block that the strings rest on just before they go to the tuning pegs, it often spaces the strings evenly as well as keeping them a uniform distance off the fingerboard.

what were the strings made out of?

You sir, are a genuis. This has to be one of my favorite things on the site. I made my own, a much simpler not-as-cool version. It only cost my about 10 dollars though, probably because I didn't add a piezo. But this is just a fantastic idea.

why are there holes drilled into the altoid tin?
It's so the sound can like resonate or something. On acoustic guitars they have the huge hole so the sound can resonate or something and be louder than just plucking a string. That's why electric guitars aren't loud without an amp, because the sound doesn't have a place to resonate or get loud. Could someone correct me if I'm wrong? Thanks
you are correct.

i really want to make one of these!! mostly for bowing, to put through a heavy reverb for sound efx, will probably use a metal neck/body for it. nice ible, really like the wingnut tuners!!

I tried this with a cassette tape box after reading it. It broke lol. I'll try to make an Altoids Bass guitar after my finger heals and I get used bass strings of of my guitar. (I used a rubber band...) You should make an instuctable about it.

I'm making a 6 string 1 of these but sadly i don't have and Altoild tin because they dont sell them here. it's gonna have a nice looking cover on it as i am using an ace of spades on it.

Awesome! I'm sort-of combining 2 'ibles now- i'm making an electric stick bass, but using your method of holding the strings tight,It's gonna be SWEEEEEEEEEET!
bumpus (author)  tudgeanator5 years ago
I'm excited to see it! :-)
It's finished now but i can't find my camera and i couldnt find a wing nut or an eye bolt,So iv'e just substatuted them with standard nuts and bolts-it just means i need a screwdriver and pair of pliers to tune it!
