Hemp twine would be best because its biodegradable, when torn up is great tinder and its quite strong When you pull it apart into tiny fibers and make a little ball all it takes it a tiny spark and it lights Best tinder i have ever tried

How do you coat a cotton ball with wax? I used to cut a 2" wide strip of newspaper, roll it tight, secure it with a string, then soak it in melted paraffin... candle or canning wax. (Make sure to use a double-boiler to melt the wax and do it in a well ventilated space.) The "torpedoes" I made this way are still functional forty years later. (I just tested one.) I peel off a 2" length, put a spot of cotton fluff on it, put a spark into the cotton, and I have a nice, hot burning "match".

I was actually in a survival class when I was like 12 and I was eating candy, so we put wax on the candy wrapper and used it to start the fire.
