Lighters aren't as reliable as matches because lighters will run out of lighter fluid eventually.

You can still use it as a one-handed sparker.

try with the lighter to make the fire go 7-14ft as a signal

Did you consider matches are single use? You'll run out of matches long before you run out of lighter fluid.

yes very true but matches can get wet and lighter can dry quickly they both are equally as good

why not just use a zippo and have a little container for extra fluid?

you could use the tire repair patch to make smoke in a signal fire, but being so small it probably wouldn't make much smoke.

Nice kit.. How would you store the alcohol wipes because they dry up quickly??
May 8, 2009. 11:19 PMsquishoso says:
Maybe it would be safer if you put the matchbox strips inside the plastic bag...because if you get if wet, you wont be able to light the matches even if they are dry...

That's why you get strike-anywhere matches =)

could you possibly extend on how to put the kit inside the altoids kit?

Don't know how you use the exacto blade to cut. But I have a single edge, plastic razor holder less'n 2" sq. that is a scraper. I got at Auto parts store. It unhinges to turn blade out and secures again. Then tuck it back in for safety. And it's not much thicker than the big side of blade. Should fit OK. Hope I never have to fish this crudely. I haven't any luck with all my gear, fresh or saltwater.

Might I suggest a curiously strong Neodymium magnet to be added?

I might suggest using a fruit-flavoured gum. Chew up a small bit of it till it's gooey but still has flavor, then use it as fish bate. It is hard to steal off the hook as it will harden a bit it the water, and it releases a lot of scent into the water. Fruit snacks work equally well (or possibly better). I've use fruit snacks before, works great, haven't actually tried gum, but the principle remains the same, and gum fits better in your kit. Works great for smaller fish such as bluegill or sun fish, though you can always use these as bate for larger fish if you don't want to eat them. Personally I think bluegill taste much better than cat, though boney little buggers they are.
