Amazing 4 Page Flip Book
Made with minimal supplies, this book flips and folds through 4 pages returning back to the first page. The estimated time for a class to complete the book is 30 minutes. The only supplies needed are paper, scissors, and glue. It works great for Haiku poems or any other 4-step process or idea. Your students will be amazed as you demonstrate how it works!

I am an Art Teacher and when I teach this lesson my objective is to introduce Art Careers. I focus in on different Illustrator/Authors such as: Eric Carle or Shel Silverstein. I then ask my students to become an Illustrator/Author of a Haiku book. When they start I have them create a rough draft of their poem with thumbnail sketches. The next day they create the flip book from the template located on step 18 and 19. After the book is drawn and written in pencil, I have them ink the drawings and words using quill pens. Color is added with a combination of marker and colored pencil.

For more advanced students a math component can be added to this project by providing measurements for the creation of the book rather than a printed sheet. To get the measurements print the templates and measure the line placements.

Step 1:

Step 1. Print both pages A and B located on pages 18 and 19. Cut out page A and B around the outside square.

Step 2:

Step 2. Fold both sheets on the dotted lines breaking in the fold so that it folds easily in both directions. Open pages A and B and lay flat.

Step 3:

Step 3. Cut both sheets on the solid lines.

Step 4:

Step 4. Put both sheets back together the way they were before you cut them and place them next to one another. Position the pages so that they are right side up. You will know sheet B is right side up when you can read the letter G correctly and it is positioned in the outer corners. On sheet A there are small dots on each half that designate the top.

Step 5:

Step 5. Rub glue in the 4 glue boxes marked with a G. Be careful not to go outside the designated lines. Using your finger to smooth the glue so that there are not any bumps.

Step 6:

Step 6. Put page A on top of page B, making sure that they are right side up. (Refer to Step 4 for right side up designations) Make sure that the edges of the paper do not overlap, but line up precisely. The more precise you are the better the book will flip and fold.

Step 7:

Step 7. Let it dry.

Step 8:

Step 8. Once the book is dry it opens from the middle and hinges on the folds that were made. Word and or drawings can be put anywhere on this page.
