In this instructable I will show you how to make cornbread. This cornbread is amazing and the recipe is really easy to make. A favorite of many here in the United States, especially in the South and Southwest, cornbread screams comfort food. Let's get baking!

Step 1: Ingredients/Tools

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter (57g)
  • 1 cup of milk (240ml)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of white granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1/2 tsp. of salt (2.5 g)
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour (125g)
  • 1 Tbsp. of baking powder (12g)
  • 1 1/4 cup of cornmeal (150g)

Tools:

***Note you can use a whisk, but the batter gets a bit thick, so you might switch to a wooden spoon, if you don't have a hand mixer or stand mixer.

Step 2: Preheat, Melt, Wet Ingredients, Mix

First let's preheat our oven to 400 degrees F. (205 C) Now let's melt our butter, I am just going to do this in the microwave, it will take about 30 to 40 seconds. Pour the melted butter in a large bowl, then add the milk, and egg. Now mix them together with a hand mixer or whisk or wooden spoon, until well combined.

Step 3: Add Dry Ingredients

Now let's add the rest of our ingredients, the sugar, salt, flour, baking powder, and the star of this recipe, the cornmeal. If you want your cornbread to be sweeter add 1/2 cup of sugar instead of 1/4 cup of sugar.

Step 4: Mix, Scrape, Mix, Clean

Now we mix all the ingredients together, the cornbread batter will be lumpy. Then scrape the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula, and then mix again for about 10 seconds. Next remove the beaters and clean them, we don't want to waste any of it.

Step 5: Grease, Pour, Spread, Bake, Cool, Serve

Now we take a 8x8 inch baking pan and grease it up with shortening, or spray it with kitchen spray, I prefer the shortening in this case. Next add all the batter to the pan, make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl to get all of it, don't go wasting that precious cornbread batter. :) Then spread the top with a spatula to make it nice and level. Now it is time to bake it. Bake it at 400 degrees F. (205 C) for 20 to 25 minutes. It will be done when the edges are golden brown and when you poke it with a toothpick in the center, it comes out clean. After removing it from the oven, let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting into it and serving it. Serve it up with jelly, butter, honey, whatever you like. that's the way I like it. I also add whole knerl corn. make it thick, less fluids add corn and onion, deep fry and you got hush puppies. man I could go on and on. but daddy do love cornbread
