Introduction: Antique Tissue Box Holder

Hi ... I teach crafts for kids and this is one of the items that I taught my students. Each and everyone ended up with a different coloured finish because I told to them to bring green (I did not specify which green). They also made different patterns according to their age capability (from 9 years to 15 years). The best part was to see their faces light up when they saw their finished product. They couldn't believe they had done that!

Anyone seeing this for the first time, was shocked to hear that the base was cardboard! I made this again as gifts for couple of my friends. So in this tutorial you will see both of them (only patterns vary)

Hope you enjoy this tutorial !

Step 1: Materials Needed

  • Cardboard
  • Cutter
  • Masking tape
  • White glue (I used Fevicol) with nozzle
  • Brush
  • Acrylic Paints - Black, Green, Gold, Copper

Step 2: Cardboard Base

  • Cut the cardboard according to the size mentioned (measurements are in cms)
  • Leave gap of the thickness of the cardboard and fix the masking tape
  • Fix the box
  • Do the same for the lid part also

Step 3: Wrapping the Whole Box With Masking Tape

Step 4: Paint It With White Glue

  • Paint the box inside out with white glue
  • Leave it to dry completely

Step 5: Draw Patterns

  • Draw patterns on the box with white glue with nozzle
  • I forgot to take pic after drawing the pattern! You can see the complete pattern in the next step after the first layer of paint.
  • Let it dry for a couple of days
  • If you want the pattern to be more embossed, give a second coating

Step 6: Painting

  • Give a first coat of black all over
  • Let it dry
  • Secondly give a coat of green
  • After it dries, give dry brush coat of gold in highlights only
  • Let it dry
  • Last coat is dry brush coat of copper
  • Leave it to dry completely
  • Give a coat of white glue again all over.
  • Let it dry.

Step 7: Finished Product

You can try this out with other colour combinations to get different finishes. Like instead of the black coat first , if you gave the green coat first and painted with diluted black over it, you will get a different look. Also instead of copper, you can use bronze finish.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
