Introduction: Apple, Cheddar & Bacon Sourdough Sandwich

About: I am one of those weird teen-age Christian homeschoolers, the kind that thinks their family is awesome and thinks that living on a farm is cool.

One day I was in the kitchen (like I am 99% of the time) and whilst rummaging through the pantry looking for ingredients to create a sandwich for my lunch, I spied a block of sharp cheddar cheese, a lone Granny Smith apple, some bacon that had been fried earlier that morning, and a loaf of artisan sourdough bread made from this amazing recipe. Then, suddenly I realized what a delicious combination these ingredients would make! Everything else fell into place, and a sandwich was born.

This amazingly easy & fabulous tasting sandwich combines the tartness of apples, the creaminess of cheddar, and the crunchiness of bacon on top of 2 slices of artisan sourdough bread slathered in Parmesan butter & grilled to perfection.

Step 1: What You Will Need

For one scrumptious sandwich, you will need the following:

1/2 stick butter, softened
2 T. freshly grated parmesan
1 Granny Smith apple
2 oz. sharp cheddar cheese
2 slices bacon (more if you prefer extra crunch!)
2 large slices artisan sourdough bread

If you like more of one particular ingredient, don't hesitate to do more of your favorite. The above is what I used to make a basic sandwich...you can customize by adding more apples, holding the bacon, or even using a different cheese such as Havarti.

Step 2: Preparation

Next, you will make your Parmesan butter-
Combine the 2T. grated Parmesan and the 1/2 stick butter in a small bowl.

Thinly slice up the Cheddar cheese into about 8 slices. You can add more/less depending on your palate.

Now, then very thinly slice up your apple. You can use as many slices as you see fit-I ended up using about 8 slices but you can add or subtract slices depending on your taste.

Step 3: Make the Sandwich

Now, you will generously butter both sides of your sourdough bread with the Parmesan butter you prepared earlier. Next, on top of the buttered sourdough, you will place your ingredients in the following order-
1. Sharp cheddar cheese
2. Apple slices
3. Bacon slices
4. (optional) more Apple slices
5. Sharp cheddar cheese
Placing the cheese on the outside, I have found, enables it to melt better around the apples and bacon, encasing them in a cloak of gooey cheddar.

Step 4: Start GRILLING!!

Get out a large griddle or frying pan and place it on medium high heat on your stove top. Now, you will place your buttery sandwich atop the hot pan and cook until that side is dark brown and the cheese is melted, then flip carefully over and cook just like the first side. The enticing smell of melting cheese and sizzling butter will fill the air. When it is ready, cheese encasing the tangy apples and crisp bacon, remove the completed sandwich from the pan and place on a plate. Eat immediately for maximum enjoyment. ENJOY!!
