As ZChampine said RAM is the easiest way to speed up a computer if you are running multiple applications. The less memory you have the more often the system has to use virtual memory; which consists of saving memory blocks to your hard drive. Once you get the max memory for your system then upgrading the drive to a faster one might make your system faster.
And when he refers to CPU speed, i assume that he is talking about clock. Many casual users think that the speed of the CPU is the determining factor. I mean a 3.8GHz P4 would surely be faster than a 2.66GHz i7, right?
lets not get into a pissing contest on which machine is better.

I used to own a Mac, it was an alright computer, but i never got to the stage of plastering everything with Apple logos.

I've never understood this hatred for good design some people have. I can only assume it's because they hate themselves so project that hatred outward when they see something wonderful.
