Introduction: Appliqué Inkodye Jacket

About: We're Lumi, a team based in LA making it easier than ever to order custom made goods. We believe getting things manufactured doesn't have to be hard and we love supporting independent artists and business owne…

Want to be able to print any item in your closet with Inkodye? When it comes to dark fabrics or detailed designs, sometimes a little creative thinking is required.

For this project, we printed custom Inkodye fabric panels and sewed them onto a jacket to create a precise, high contrast design. The final product is both professional and one-of-a-kind.

Step 1: Used in the Project:

Step 2: Gather

Grab some Inkodye and pick the perfect image. Then find a brush, bowl, scissors, and a good work surface.

Step 3: Prepare Your Negatives

Need some help making negatives? Our Printing Negatives guide has you covered.

Step 4: Pick

This bright jacket seemed like the perfect candidate for a makeover.

Step 5: Print

It’s time to use Inkodye to bring your design to life. If you have questions about the Lumi process, our guide to Printing Photos On Cotton with Inkodye will walk you through the steps.

Step 6: Wash

After printing the rest of your panels, use Inkowash to rinse out any undeveloped dye.

Step 7: Make Pattern

Use thick paper, a pencil, and scissors to shape a pattern for each fabric panel. Make sure the panels are roughly half an inch bigger than needed in each direction.

Step 8: Cut

Trace each pattern onto the printed fabric. Carefully cut out all the panels. We’re getting close!

Step 9: Fold

Fold over all of the panel edges until the panel is the exact size and shape needed. Finally, iron the edges so they stay in place.

Step 10: Tip!

If your sewing skills leave something to be desired, consider asking a friend you help you out. We got a helping hand from our friends at Apliiq.

Step 11: Sew

Slow and steady, carefully stitch the Inkodye panels onto your jacket.

Step 12: Celebrate!

Congratulations! Your clothing is officially cooler than ever. Wear it with pride!

Step 13: Innovate!

Use this technique can breathe new life into anything in your wardrobe. What are you waiting for?
