Elf ears... in 5 minutes!

Whether it is for a costume you are working on, attending a Renaissance Festival, or participating in interactive gaming, there are times when you just need to wear some pointed ears. Yes, that's right, I'm talking about elf ears.

I stumbled upon another instructable, "How to Apply Elf Ears," a few months ago, and thought I would offer a different approach to applying elf ears: how to apply elf ears realistically but also quickly. I have been wearing elf ears for about 8 years now, and have been painting and applying them professionally for about 6 years. I would classify myself as an elf ear expert.

When I first started wearing ears, I would spend at least an hour before the show painting, gluing, applying liquid latex, blow-drying, and then repainting the ears. And in the end, I would still have visible seams and mismatched colors on my skin and latex. After an hour of work, it still wouldn't look like the movies.

With this instructable, I hope to teach you how to maintain the color of your ears, so that when it is time to glue them on, you can stick them on in under 5 minutes, without sacrificing a realistic look. You will learn a few of the "cheats" that I have discovered to make your elven life a little easier.

Step 1: Supplies

The following is a list of necessary supplies, a list of optional items, and finally a list of not really needed items. This necessary list assumes that you can purchase the elf ears pre-painted or find someone to paint them for you, either of which makes your life much easier.

Necessary:
Elf ears
Spirit gum

Optional:
Ear Cuffs
Make-ups (rubber mask grease paint or RMG as it is called)
Make-up sponges
Setting powder (baby powder works too)
Powder puff

Least necessary:
Flesh Latex
Make-up and Spirit gum remover

Ear Cuffs. For me personally, I feel that ear cuffs are a necessary item, but you may not. Ear cuffs are used to hide the seam on the back curve of your ear. These can be simple cuffs to crazy fancy cuffs with chains and piercings.

RMG make-up. Through the years, I have discovered that the best supplier of make-ups is Graftobian. When painting any latex prosthetic, you want to use [http://www.graftobian.com/$spindb.query.listcat2.grcatview.K2.10..Rubber~20Mask~20Grease~20Palettes~2cetc~2e rubber mask grease paint], also known as RMG. This is the best make-up to use, and it also doesn't destroy latex like cosmetic make-ups do. RMG's main ingredient is castor oil, which is what you want. Any make-up with mineral oil as the primary ingredient will slowly break down the latex. Avoid mineral oil! NOTE: However, if the ears are painted with a coat of castor oil based make-up, then painting over the RMG with mineral oil make-up isn't as bad for the latex. But the best is always castor oil make-up.

Make-up sponges. Just go to your local department store and purchase a package of 12 round make-up sponges. They last a long time and work perfectly.

Setting Powder. After you paint RMG make-up, you need to "set" it so that it is no longer tacky. Setting it helps prevent it from rubbing off when you touch the ears as well. To do this, you need setting powder (or just use baby powder) and a powder puff.

For this instructable, you shouldn't need any flesh latex since all of the seams will be hidden via quicker, simpler methods, i.e. hair and ear cuffs. Also, if you use Graftobian brand spirit gum, you shouldn't need any remover either, since Graftobian spirit gum cleans off easily using just soap and water.

I'm impressed by the finished look, but do they actually help you hear any better? That was the intention, right?
kalessaradan (author) in reply to busteditAug 7, 2008. 12:47 PM
Nope. These are for for costuming uses.

I got a pair of elf ears and some cuffs to hides the outter seam, but i want the inside flap to blend in with my skin, how do you reccommend doing this? Just liquid latex and makeup? Thanks!
DioJun says: Apr 26, 2009. 12:14 PM
Awesome Instructable, and awesome people! I see you pretty much every year at garenfest, helpful as always! =)
I definitely recommend Aradani's ears if you want a nice pair.
Mr. Brownie says: Jan 29, 2009. 1:53 PM
I'm sorry but what is an ear cuff?
kalessaradan (author) in reply to Mr. BrownieJan 29, 2009. 2:19 PM
those are the little metal objects in all of the photos. They are like toe rings, shaped like a U, that cuff onto the cartilage of your ear, about halfway up. You'll notice in the photos that some are fancy with chains connected to piercings, and others are just simple cuffs.

Where can i find really high-quality elf ears (small). I live in San Francisco.

HMMM, this pretty neat, you know for a Christmas party. (YOU CAN BE AN elf!!!)
Kitkaze says: Aug 7, 2008. 5:37 PM
When you say "rose blush" do you mean a simple powder blush, cause I for the life of me can't find that color on Aradani in the RMG makeup section. I can however find it in the creme makeup section. But I don't think thats correct for latex prosthetics.

And thank you for you wonderful tutorial! _
kalessaradan (author) in reply to KitkazeAug 7, 2008. 6:34 PM
Sorry about that. We use "Rose blush" because it is a pinker tone. But in order to keep the number of make-ups that we carry to a minimum (and keep us from ripping our hair out), we decided that Red would cover more bases than Rose Blush. Red allows you to paint Urukai, demons, devils, AND the blush tones of ears. We just find Rose Blush to be a little nicer since it is a less-saturated tone. However, it you were to purchase the "Light Flesh RMG stack," you would have every color you would need to paint both a light ear and a medium ear according to the instructable. (you can mix the sierra and dark bronze to get something similar to medium highlight).

Thank you oh so much! _ I can't wait to give this a try!

I cannot say that I have any interest in the actual subject matter, but I wanted to compliment you on what is probably one of the best-written instuctional I have read. I read the whole thing, even though the subject is not in my interest range. The instruction clarity is exceptional, and I actually understood what I would need to do should I ever really want to wear elf ears! lol

An elfe and a hobbit ? What a lovely couple ;)
kalessaradan (author) in reply to MrPhelpsMay 24, 2008. 11:31 PM
I don't know if I should take offense at that comment. I tend to dress up as Link from The Legend of Zelda quite often, so it makes me a little self conscious to be called a hobbit. Oh well, guess I need to eat a little less and exercise a little more. : )
SpinWard in reply to kalessaradanAug 7, 2008. 2:05 PM
More like Jak from Jak and Daxter. This is great! Dragon*Con is only 21 days away! Thanks for the idea!

You can always visit us at Dragon*Con! My brother Michael will be in the Dealer's room, and I will be in the Art Show selling my artwork. Hope to see you there!
rosa draconum says: Mar 7, 2008. 10:19 AM
I was looking on the Graftobian website, and they don't seem to carry "Sierra" as a shade of RMG. Any recommendations on what should be used instead?
kalessaradan (author) in reply to rosa draconumJun 11, 2008. 4:24 PM
Just wanted to let you know that because of demand created by this instructable, Aradani Studios now sells Graftobian brand RMG make-up on our website (and it is cheaper than getting it directly from Graftobian). So now you can get ears and RMG at the same place and save on shipping costs. RMG make-up

I have some from aradani's to and i'm quite pleased with them, I chose the wrong tone for my skin though so with make up during the shows they don't look the same, but they have a reasonable price and look wonderful

Am I the only one who sees irony with putting elf ears and realistically in the same sentence? I mean, their elf ears. How realistic can they be? OK, I'm just kidding. I konw what you mean. It just struck me as funny. Kind of like Garth Brooks and Hewey Lewis releasing "Working for a Living." I mean, one of them is retired, and the other hasn't had a hit in years. They can't sing about working for a living!
mrmath in reply to mrmathMay 16, 2008. 6:17 AM
Self Inflicted Pete Peeve! Their->Belonging to them. They're->They are!

lol nice insult on Garth and Hewey...

*cough* don't see you making hit albums though lol
mrmath in reply to aliceownsj00May 16, 2008. 6:17 AM
That's my point. I haven't seen them making hit albums recently either. Now they are talking about working for a living. They haven't been working!

Nice tips! An ear cuff would certainly have made life easier, but I only had one.

Elves and Vulkans are mortal enemies, so stay clear of any Trekkie conventions.
kalessaradan (author) in reply to iain010100Feb 7, 2008. 10:20 AM
Actually, Vulcans are the descendants of elves... and hopefully the Trekkie you say that too has a sense of humor. Luckily phasers don't exist yet. :P
KentsOkay says: Feb 7, 2008. 4:31 AM
WOOT! This will be great for LARPing, no more waiting around on my ears!
incorrigible packrat says: Feb 6, 2008. 8:34 PM
I was gonna say, "Why not just have your ears surgically altered?", but there's that pesky "be nice" comment policy. Mind you, I'm sure some people have already had such alterations. Much stranger things have been done. Sometimes, for kicks, (and punches), I used to fold in the top parts of my earlobes, so's to form Spock ears, securing them with Scotch tape. Anyhow, nice Instructablification.
kalessaradan (author) in reply to incorrigible packratFeb 6, 2008. 9:08 PM
Actually, I do not believe that there is currently an additive process that can make someone's ears long and pointy. The only surgical processed I have seen involve removing a wedge from your ear and sewing your ear back together... after seeing the photos of the process, I gladly wear latex prosthetics instead. Much cheaper, and much less likely to cause me to faint.
incorrigible packrat in reply to kalessaradanFeb 6, 2008. 9:25 PM
Eeeeek! It seems like a sound plan to stick with the prosthetic ears.
GorillazMiko says: Feb 6, 2008. 8:35 PM
