Introduction: Arduino: Reuse a Laptop Fan

Welcome to my -Reuse- Instructable Series.

In This Instructable We Will Be Using An Old Laptop Fan To Get Rid Of Soldering Smoke.

You Will Need:

  • Old Compaq NX9010
  • Screwdriver
  • Arduino Nano
  • Male to Male Jumper Wire
  • USB A/B Cable (Old Printer Cable)
  • Solder less Breadboard
  • Soldering Iron

Step 1: Compaq NX9010 Teardown

Follow This Link To Teardown The PC

http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_8658568_disassemble-comp...

This Should Take You 30-60 Minutes.

When Done Disconnect The Fans From The PC

Because We Need It For The Tutorial

Step 2: Connecting the Fan to the Arduino!

Put Your Arduino On The Breadboard

Left Side On B and Right Side On F.

Connect One Jumper Wire To 5V then connect the other end to the red wire on the BIG FAN!

Connect another Jumper Wire to GND then connect the other end to Black/Blue on the BIG FAN!

Connect One Jumper Wire To 5V then connect the other end to the red wire on the SMALL FAN!

Connect another Jumper Wire to GND then connect the other end to Black/Blue on the SMALL FAN!

Step 3: Use for Soldering

Lean The Fans Against Something Then You Can Use For Soldering!

Hook The Arduino Up To 5V Power Supply And Use The USB A/B Cable For This.

Hope You Enjoyed This Instructable!

Thanks.

So the purpose of the arduino is to use it as a power supply?

It would be a very good idea to add a transistor, if you want to keep your Arduino intact, as the fan is bound to need way more than the 25mA that an Arduino I/O can handle :)
