This guy was either in the wrong place at the wrong time, or totally had it coming...

I want to be Ray Villafane when I grow up!
Nice work. Any chance you documented the process step by step? I suspect a lot of people are also Ray Villafane wannabes. :D
Thanks Wilgubeast!

Alas, I did not document... I have a few other pumpkin 'ibles up (more to come, of course), but it's hard to take in-progress photos with pumpkin guts on your hands, so only a few are step-by-step:
Skull-Pumpkin | Life-size-Skeleton-Pumpkin-Carving! | Attack-of-Gourdzilla-Dino-Pumpkin

Ray sells how-to books and DVDs, I'd say go to the source!

Other than that, googling "relief sculpture" is a good start. The pumpkin is just one in a vast array of stuff you can carve; I've seen some pretty amazing melon sculptures out there!

Essentially it's 1. find a weird pumpkin, 2. draw on it with sharpie, 3. using mainly clay tools, cut deep where you can and shallow where you must. And don't let the shape boss you around!

Mike
Looks great.
