Introduction: Automatic Garage Gate (portn Automtico)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

A few years ago I made this monster, and I can say is one of the things that have given me better results. The garage door automation is an exception to the rule that says that comfort is contrary to safety. At least in my case, nothing more comfortable and safe to come to my house, press the button on the remote control from the corner, see how the gate opens, go straight, without even stopping the car. Similarly, leaving the operation is very fast: put the engine running, pull the hand brake, open the gate, set back off and leave, and when the trunk of the car overpass the gate line, I can pull the close button. If there is a thief prowling the area, should be very close to my home and very alert to intercept me, given that I have not to get off the car or stop at any time. The opening time is 7 seconds, and closing the same thing.

Not to mention the rainy days, I wet neither a single drop. My wife, grateful.

But when I install the automatic gate opener, had a small problem: two-door version costing more than doubled. And I am not of those who do not look at the price. So I decided to buy an automatic slide gate and adapt it to my needs. Following I tell you how I did.

Step 1: Fixing (fijacin)

I located the motor hanging from the rafters, on a platform firmly held with iron supports and struts. This is crucial because the engine makes a lot of force, especially on windy days. As I said in other instructables, aesthetics is the least of my worries.

Step 2: The Rack (la Cremallera)

I got a square iron pipe 4x4 cm, which acts as a barrel or tunnel into which slides the rack. I was forced to reverse the rack position, putting teeth upwards, to avoid having too low the motor. The only drawback to this is that the ambient dust is deposited on the rack, but after several years of use, it have not result in any problem.

Step 3: The Arms (los Brazos)

Once installed the engine in place, and with the rack in working condition, I measured the length that should have the arms  that would move the gate, and the position where they should be articulated in order to reach both ends (closed - open) . Since the left wing should be closed first because the other has a tab that covers the union, I did telescopic the arms, slightly variable in length, by two separate springs located on the inside. This allows the motor to reach the end of the path and the two leaves of the gate are securely closed. The ends of the arms that are attached to the rack are in double joint, vertical and horizontal because the movement  they do.

Step 4: The Guide (la Gua)

When there is side wind the rack tends to twist. So I had to add a guide to keep it in place while moving back and forth.

Step 5: The Latch (el Pestillo)

My garage door has a single latch, below. So far I have not had problems with that. At first I thought in an electromagnet to act it, but when I found out I gave up because prices are almost the same as the automatic motor. So I made a simple mechanism of levers, which are activated by the engine's power to lift the latch to open and down it to close, locked by the action of a spring. On the floor screwed a piece of iron rod slightly inclined to act as a barrier.

Step 6: Anti-theft Protection (proteccin Antirrobo)

It could happen that a thief jumped over the mediatrix wall, entered the garage through the back door, loosen some nuts, release the gate, open it by hand and take the car. To avoid this I took the electric welder and put a tack weld at the end of each critical screw. That makes it hard to disassemble, which I hope is not necessary for many years, but I can hand grinder to remove the weld quickly.

Step 7: Plan B

What if the power goes out? In my area that happens every so often, and the motor is provided for by a lever that releases the mechanism to act it out by hand. But as I hung it from the ceiling, to reach the lever would have perched on the hood of the car, which would be crazy, not to mention that it could be that I was not present, and expect my wife to do that would be science fiction. So I had to make the actuator arms are easily detachable, but at the same time, not a potential thief can do.  I solved this by means of connect the actuator arms thru vertical struts that attach them to the gate, and that in turn are held in place with individual padlocks.

So if there is power outage, I have only to locate the keys to the padlocks, open them, remove the props, detach the actuator arms and open and close the gate manually using its key, that is also stored in these cases.
