How To Clean A Porcelain Sink

Every-time that I clean my stove top; I get black marks in my porcelain sink.  I have been avoiding harsh chemicals to clean my house so this Instructable is how I clean my sink using friendlier products.  My sink is the original sink from the late 30's.  There have been many tenants over the years and I think for its age and use the sink looks pretty good. 

Step 1: Products

To clean this sink I used:

Baking Soda.
Peroxide.
 

Step 2: Tools

Sponge with a safe texture for cleaning.
Bar towels.

Step 3: Scrub

Wet the sink.
Wet the sponge.
Sprinkle Baking Soda on the sponge.
Begin scrubbing the surface.

Step 4: Peroxide

Add Peroxide to the sponge.
Scrub some more.
Let set for 15 Minutes.

Step 5: Rinse

• Rinse the sink thoroughly.
• Scrub any remaining spots.
• Rinse again.
• Buff dry with a bar towel.
• Done!

Step 6: Optional Lemon Oil

I usually finish off using Lemon Oil on the sink and faucet to make it shine.
Then I buff it with a clean bar towel.
It also reduces clean up time.

I recommend Weiman Lemon Oil, or Haley's; I like them for wood because they seem to moisten wood longer. 

Step 7: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts

As you can see the Baking Soda and Peroxide did wonders for the marks.  I use these products a lot around my house and I am very pleased with the results.  Just think; I did not have to use harsh chemicals and the sink is beautiful!

Another cheap friendly way to clean stuff like this is using white vinegar...me and my mother use vinegar for EVERYTHING that need s cleaned

I have MCS and I can use these products where almost all on shelf items I cannot. If you can put it in your mouth than it should be a safe product. I use peroxide as a mouth wash. I wash my hair with baking soda and clean my toliets with it plus many other uses. It is a natural product.

So so glad to see someone else knows how to clean without adding more toxic products to our earth. I only use peroxide, baking soda, and vinegars mainly for cleaning. People should do a web search for uses of vinegar. There is tons of ideas and this is a way cheaper and safer way to go. A Healthy Home Has No Smell.

I'm going to try this method on my fiberglass shower stall.... it gets a brown stain around the lower edge, due to hard water, body oils, soap scum, etc. I do use baking soda for lots of stuff, but the mixture of baking soda AND peroxide (which is a bleach!) just might do the trick. For me, the hard part is the instruction to "wait 15 minutes". I like results NOW! haha!

Also: I use alcohol in a 32-oz. spray bottle (very inexpensive). It deodorizes and sanitizes stuff ... counter tops after dealing w/ raw poultry, sinks, glass ware, crystal, removes carpet stains, removes smell of cat barf or other pet accidents, etc....it's great stuff! Just thought I'd throw that in; you can add it to your list of household cleaning products. Vinegar is another really great cleaning product, that is inexpensive and highly effective!

Maybe the preferred word would be harmful. Baking soda is a very benign and natural product with so many uses as you have proven once more. Your sink looks great!

I find that if you refresh the page a few times (3-6 times) the rating stars will eventually appear. Not sure why this is, but like the non-enlarging thumbnails, I'm trying to find a solution (for the thumbnail issue, Adblock Plus is the problem and updating the filter subscription solves the issue).
I gave you full stars! I need to do this on the tub in my house (original from the 1930's). Our kitchen sink is too small for some of our larger pots so we have to wash them there until I can upgrade the kitchen sink.

I've had success with reloading the page several times, but it doesn't always work. The main thing is, the staff is aware of the issue and is working on getting it fixed, (as well as the thumbnail photos), so hopefully it'll get solved soon.
