Introduction: Awesome Pallet Dismantling Technique
Using pallet wood is a great way to save money on material while producing some great products; however, taking the pallets/skids apart can be a challenge.
There are many people using and promoting demolition techniques. The way I show you here allows you to save the entire length of the pallets boards and the bonus is... you save the nails too.
Let me show you how to save the wood... and the nails.
Be sure to visit my website Red Barn Crafts for the video on this Pallet Project.
or you can go directly to my YouTube channel RedBarnCrafts
Step 1: The Tool to Use
There are a number of screw extraction bits and dowel plug cutters; BUT, they are all NOT created equal. I explain this on my YouTube video... you can find the link on the introduction page of this Instructable.
Step 2: The Tool NOT to Use
This is a screw extractor bit. The problem with using it for this technique is that the bit will overheat and breakdown. Other plug cutters (beside the one I show you in step 1) will require a drill press and that would get quite awkward.
I have a link on my website for the ones I use CLICK HERE.
Step 3: Aligning the Cutter
Simply align the cutter over a nail and press down before starting the drill motor (that will help prevent the cutter from moving around). Then repeat for all nails on the board.
Step 4: Remove the Board
After all the nails are drilled out (plugged out in this case) from the board you're working on... simply lift the board and repeat the process on the remaining boards until done.
Step 5: Inserting Dowel
Actually before inserting the dowel as shown in this step, you can view the video to see how I deal with cracked boards... find the video link in on the introduction of this Instructable.
Step 6: Flush Cut the Dowel
This is pretty self explanatory....
Step 7: Finished
This is one hole plugged...now simply repeat this step on the rest of your project.
HOWEVER... please note: treat all cracks before inserting dowels.
We have a be nice policy.
Please be positive and constructive.
