Bacon Roses

Flowers make a nice gift to the friend that needs a smile or for that special someone in your life. Roses are even better. But sometimes even roses don't cut it. Sometimes you need something a little more non-cliché, something...extraordinary... Sometimes, you need BACON.

I would just like to say, that these roses were not only beautiful, but also tasty, delicious and aromatic!!! After receiving them, I laughed (in the best possible way) every time I looked at them for the first day or two. When he gave me these, I was ecstatically happy to say the least.

This was an incredible idea and well worth the first prize for the bacon contest. I just made this for Valentines day and it was a hit.
Several people have had problems cooking the bacon fully beacuse the fat pools and boils the bacon insead of cooks it. I had the same problem until I opened up the drain holes about the size of a dime, or around 1/2 inch. The larger the holes, the better drainage beacuse bacon fat is your worst enemy, at least for this project!

Thank you so much for this idea!!!

Made these for my girlfriend for V-Day this year. Fairly easy to follow and awesome Instructable (tho it took me closer to 90 minutes from start to finish...kept my bacon in for 45 minutes at 375 to crisp the non-fat edges). I used shiny mini-muffin cups with holes punched in the bottom with a chopstick laid on a roasting pan with grill for the fat to drip into (lifted up the roses a few times to let the fat drain). I also tried different lengths of bacon (some strips cut in half) to make smaller 'buds' and used the leftover petals from the stems for tabletop decoration....she's not a huge flower-lover but she absolutely LOVED these...thanks gang!

Also for an easier, less tool handy person like myself, they also work by using a disposable aluminum muffin pan and poking holes with a knife.

Thank you so much for the great instructions and pictures! I didn't want to drill holes in a muffin pan so I used a jalapeno popper grill rack. I turned them half way through and they came out great! Now, using the thinner cut bacon won't work because they won't be wide enough and will fall through the holes. The thick cut bacon worked great though. Can't wait to give them to my dad for Father's day.

FaeDine says: Feb 22, 2012. 2:35 PM
I just wanted to give a proper Thank You! to the author of this. I used these for a recent wedding proposal to my girlfriend and they were a total hit! Thank you so much! They went great with the bacon ring ;)

For anyone curious, I didn't want to drill through a pan so did end up using a "silicone mini-muffin" pan and it worked quite well. I still think a metal pan is likely ideal if you're going to make more than one "batch" though.

Also, wow, the bacon gets even tastier when it's all curled up.
ditzyclutz says: Feb 14, 2012. 9:14 PM
Oh yeah! Mama's bringin home the bacon, baby! These turned out AWESOME! They were sooo easy to make. I picked up everything from the dollar store (2 six-rose stems, 3 green filler stems, 1 green vase, 2 bags of glass floral beads). Only $8.00 + tax, not counting the bacon! I didn't have a mini muffin tin, so I stole Breumer's idea of using the aluminum part of a tea light candle - poked holes in the bottom and set them all on a cookie sheet. Worked perfect! I gave the bacon bouquet to my fella for Valentine's Day today! The best part... upon first glance he didn't even realize they weren't real roses! Thanks for the great idea!

I didn't want to drill holes in my tins so I used a pizza pan with holes in the bottom and put a cookie pan under it. I also skewered the bacon so they would stay together and put some brown sugar on a couple.

And then I made chocolate cupcakes with the intention of making them look like a bouquet....but they exploded so I ad-libbed a little.

I am vegetarian but am making these for my fiance. Normally I don't admit my food orientation but in this case, it says a lot about my (lack of) knowledge of good eatin'. As I don't know the first thing about cooking meat - & this is my first time even handling it - there are two instruction components I am unclear on: the first being that I can't tell which is the "fat end". Is it the white-ish part? Also, is the referenced grease something I need to do to the pan, or does this naturally come from the bacon? Please help, anyone! Today is his birthday, & I've got just a couple hours before he gets home.

Thanks sincerely :D
kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to ErinMichelleFeb 13, 2012. 9:10 AM
A vegetarian making these? That must be true love! :)
Yes, the white-ish part is the fat. The grease just naturally comes off from the bacon as it cooks. You don't need to do anything to the pan (except drill/poke holes in the bottom)
ErinMichelle in reply to kaptaink_cgFeb 13, 2012. 10:11 AM
Between my love for him & his love for bacon, there is a whole lot'a' love here! I guessed right about the fat edge & am in the midst of coooking them now. Your instructions were very thorough & helpful. It's just that I can't cook. Not even a grilled cheese. If I could, I'd send you a dozen also! Thanks again.

These look (and taste) lovely! Try painting them a vivid red colour with a liquid food dye and a paintbrush, to make them look even more realistic.

When I made these, the middles of my bacon didn't cook. I was hoping to make them for Valentines day for my honey but now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to emmaleighcatFeb 12, 2012. 7:37 PM
Did you use a pan with holes in the bottom, and did you ensure that the fat was draining from the pan? If you did that, then they just need to be cooked longer. If the fat stays in the pan they'll take forever to crisp up and wont cook properly.

My wife came back from Alaska (10 hr flight), and I picked her up at the airport with a bouquet of Bacon Roses. She said it was one of the best suprises I have given her. Perfect for when you are hungry and jet lagged.

Thankyou VERY much for the idea. It was really easy to do. One suggestion for those that try this: Cook the bacon for 5 minutes longer than you think is needed. The center does not cook as quickly as the out side.

Next time I might try wraping them around a nail or something so that the center is cooked just as well as the out side.

Oh, and I just a hammer and nail to make the hole in the bottom of the muffin tin. It worked well, and made a nice curved bottom so that grease did not pool much at all.

Bacon's actually relatively healthy when you cook it in a pan, especially when you allow the grease to escape (such as here), so these are... well, not exactly healthy, but a bit further away from walking heart-attack.

kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to ebrown12Sep 6, 2011. 9:57 PM
Well... they keep as long as cooked bacon keeps.. and frankly I'm not sure how long that is? If you refrigerate them over night they will most definitely still be good the following day.

I made these for my boyfriend for Fathers Day and they turned out amazing!

Instead of drilling holes in a mini-muffin pan, I found small aluminum butter or sauce cups that were the same size and used those. I placed them on a baking rack in a deep metal pan so the grease could drip through.

I'm thinking about trying these with turkey bacon next time!

I made a whole dozen so we had them refrigerated for a few days. We had fun finding new ways to add them to stuff. Sliced spirals on a salad or in mac n cheese were our favorites.

I made these, and they were wonderful. I didn't have a mini muffin tin, however, and was too poor to get one. Instead I made cups out of tin foil and put them in the broiler pan. Poked holes in the bottom, and they worked great! The downside is that you can only make a few this way, my pan could fit 12 of the cups.

Step 1 has me concerned because you are taking a metal object to a teflon coated baking pan. You are breaking the barrier seal, exposing toxic chemicals into the food you are cooking as well as the air that you breathe.

Search for "dangers of teflon" if you wish to learn more about protecting your health.
Taranach in reply to jovinoApr 17, 2011. 3:02 PM
While this may be so IF you overheat the pan, one should always be paying attention to your cooking, not wandering out of the room to attend to other things, that is how kitchen fires can start which are FAR more dangerous than a minuscule amount of gas. Basically, if your pans are smoking, not steaming, then you the heat is to high. Next is the drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of other toxins we take in on a daily basis. You are in effect removing one "possible" source of toxins from hundreds if not thousands more. Living on the planet earth is toxic and ultimately fatal.

Let's not forget that most dangerous toxin of all... look up "dihydrogen monoxide" better known as DHMO at www.DHMO.org why has this NOT been banned! it is FAR more dangerous than ALL the possible toxins discussed here!
jovino in reply to TaranachApr 17, 2011. 4:07 PM
DHMO... HAHAHA!!! This one always makes me laugh!

Dihydrogen monoxide. AKA water
harmons02 in reply to TaranachApr 17, 2011. 3:45 PM
True, Dihydrogen monoxide (also known as hydric acid) is responsible for injury, death, and property damage all over the world. Visit the Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division online at www.dhmo.org, or send email to info@dhmo.org for more information. Tell the EPA to ban Dihydrogen monoxide!

sderyck in reply to maxm2820Apr 24, 2011. 3:47 PM
The bacon's actually a lot healthier if you allow all the grease to seep out, so I guess that's one of the advantages of drilling.

You can purchase very cheaply some aluminum mini pans at a dollar store and punch away without missing up a nice pan to do this.

Could you use a silicon muffin tray instead of the teflon coated one? You could still poke the holes in for drainage but you wouldn't be risking your health (I don't think!). I live Down Under and we have 6 and 12 hole silicon mini muffin trays. Other than that, these look really great!
patshandofdoom in reply to jacarandaquiltsApr 17, 2011. 8:15 PM
truthfully, i think you could just buy a cheap aluminum foil pan from a "dollar store" and poke some holes in that. You might notice in the pictures that the bacon buds don't even touch the sides of the mini-muffin tins. you could also cook a lot more in a batch with an aluminum pan.

kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to patshandofdoomApr 17, 2011. 9:10 PM
I'd still recommend the mini-muffin pans. When you squish them down the bottoms barely touch the edges. It helps give the bottoms a "flare" so they look kinda like real rose buds.
javajunkie1976 says: Apr 17, 2011. 6:34 PM
I think this would be a reverse gift. Instead of the guy giving flowers to a girl, it would be the GIRL giving to a guy!!

Love the idea and concept. I can feel my arteries hardening.

Now to find a girl that loves bacon as much as I do. I will suggest this: chocolate. Just listen to it as it drools off your tongue... Chocolate covered bacon roses. Make it happen!
EvlPwnda in reply to Kaged KombatApr 17, 2011. 2:56 PM
Brilliant! I sooo want them! :) *drools*
Sparkyrob in reply to Kaged KombatApr 17, 2011. 8:41 AM
Umm, no. I love bacon, and I love chocolate. I have tasted the two together before, and have to say: I will keep them separate from now on.

sir (or ma'm) i bow to you.
divah says: Apr 17, 2011. 2:29 PM
skarah, why not rest it on a larger cake or casserole pan. Then the fat drips down into the pan so you can save it. That would probably solve the pooling in the bottom of the muffin cup too.
beecrofter says: Apr 17, 2011. 9:39 AM
There are no metal shavings if you just punch the holes with a nail.
RichardBronosky in reply to beecrofterApr 17, 2011. 12:32 PM
+1 I had the idea of using a nail because the depressed bottom that will result helps the grease drain.
kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to RichardBronoskyApr 17, 2011. 1:32 PM
Good point. Even better if you use a cheapie pan as suggested in some other comments.
kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to beecrofterApr 17, 2011. 11:51 AM
Very true. I thought about puncturing them with a nail, but I was afraid the holes would "push out" which could scratch everything up.
lmanno says: Apr 17, 2011. 1:06 PM
What a Clever, Delicious idea!!!!! There are so many people I would make this for but it would look even more awesome on a buffet table. I LOVE this!!!
Thanx!!!
JBZG says: Apr 17, 2011. 1:00 PM
Nothing says 'I love you'... quite as much as crispy , cracklin rose!
(accompanied by Neil Diamond of course)
skarah says: Apr 17, 2011. 9:48 AM
Do you absolutely have to drill the holes? Did you try it with the fat left in the muffin pan? I'm just curious, because I always save bacon grease (for frying eggs, browning onions, etc) and would be worried to use bacon grease that had gone through the hole of a compromised non-stick pan, which is the only kind of muffin pan I have.
bradhart in reply to skarahApr 17, 2011. 12:05 PM
Get a foil muffin pan from a dollar store or any other cheap muffin pan for a buck or three from the cheap stores if this is something you want to do. The important thing is the grease drains out. Of course you probably have tens of thousands of micro-nicks in your nonstick pans that compromise the lining that you already don't know about so I wouldn't worry about it.
skarah in reply to bradhartApr 17, 2011. 12:23 PM
Ha! That's precisely why I don't use them super often. I realize it's a phobia, which, by definition, means irrational, but thanks for the cheapie idea.
kaptaink_cg (author) in reply to skarahApr 17, 2011. 11:49 AM
I had a few where the fat didn't drain out while they were cooking. It doesn't work out too well. The tops burn and the bottom stays "juicy" They don't look as good then, and it makes them heavier. Then you'll have an issue keeping them upright on the stems.
kooyma in reply to kaptaink_cgApr 18, 2011. 6:25 PM
droool...how about "making" little cups of tin foil? you get the hole, the shape you want and I suspect you might be able to open them up the tiniest bit more...?
kaptaink- I hold you in highest regard! now to leave this page open "accidentally" so's the BF gets the idea himself! :O) Thanks!!

This is such a phenomenally creative idea! This is the type of gift that would be forever ingrained in my memory as one to top! Seriously... it's SO much better than roses, and so much more thoughtful! You're one hell of a partner, and your girl is seriously lucky.

If my guy weren't so awesome, I'd be jealous! ;)

Probably not.. The roses wouldn't form correctly.

Thought this was awesome, so I made my girlfriend some for our anniversary. She failed to see the humour though and now I'm living in a box in an alleyway near my house.
on the up side though, I've got both a tasty and ornate snack!

Just kidding, the other half likes meat on a stick almost as much as me, pretty meat on a stick? even better!

There can never be enough meat on a stick!

These bacon roses are both beautiful and tasty.
This is a great concept and easy to follow instructable.
Looks like a winner to me.
I do agree with bentm about the pan, a shame to ruin it for other uses but, C'est la vie.

It's not ruined, it's my "Bacon-Rose-Pan"! :) I'll just have to use mini muffin cups if I want to cook anything else.

bentm says: Apr 14, 2011. 5:24 PM

I love these! Nice execution!

I wonder if the roses be rolled up or wrapped around a skewer, tied with kitchen string, and baked upright on a rack. Though I don't think the holes would ruin the pan for other uses entirely, it does seem potentially wasteful.
