A tasty side dish for any occasion, that is easy to make. Well at least for those who like sauerkraut.
This was a slight after thought following the Broccoli and Bacon Salad Recipe I posted, so I apologize for the lack of step by step photos. I hope you enjoy.
Step 1: Ingredients and Needed Items
Here is what you will need:
- 3 bags of Sauerkraut
- 1lb of Bacon
- 1lb of Sausage or brat meat(if wanted)
- Large Onion
- 1lb of Mushrooms
- 1 box or bag of rotini or bow-tie pasta
- Large baking dish
- Small bowl
- Frying pan
Step 2: Preparing the Kraut
First drain and rinse the 3 bags of sauerkraut. Put the kraut in to a large baking dish.
Step 3: Frying the Bacon
Take your bacon and cut into small pieces. Once you have cut up the pound of tasty meat place into your frying pan and put on medium heat. You want the bacon cooked but not crispy.
Step 4: Into the Small Bowl
Now cut and chop the onions and mushrooms into small pieces. With the onion it is easier to cut in half and score into a grid as in the pictures. Once you have done cook the onions and mushrooms down for a little while in your 2nd pan. Once they are done dump the 2 cooked items into the baking dish with the sauerkraut.
Then dump the pan of bacon in drippings and all into the baking dish and mix everything together.
Step 5: The Pasta
Now you need to boil your chosen pasta until tender. Then drain and rinse.
Once this is complete add to the baking dish with the kruat, bacon, mushrooms, and onions. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
Step 6: Sausage or Bratwurst Meat(This Step Is Optional, If Not Used Skip to the Next Step)
This step is optional. Brown the sausage or brat meat in the frying pan. Cook the meat until it is done and make that it is in small pieces or chunks. Add to the baking dish and mix in.
Step 7: Smooth Out and Cook
Smooth out the ingredients in the baking dish. Cover and place in the oven at 350° for about an hour.
Step 8: Ready to Serve
After baking for an hour, take out of the oven its ready to serve.
