3 Simple Ways to
Share What You Make

With Instructables you can share what you make with the world — and tap into an ever-growing community of creative experts.

PhotosPhotos

Share one or more photos of a project, recipe, or whatever you've made, quickly and easily.

Step by StepStep-By-Step

Share your step-by-step photos with text instructions of what you made so others can do it too!

Share your how-to video. You'll need your embed code from a video site such as YouTube.

Be an Aeronautical Scientist: Make your Own Jet Engine for a few Pennies.

Step 5How to do it properly...

Drill a nice, circular hole in the lid of your jar.

Splash a few millilitres of meths into the bottom of the jar and screw the lid on tightly.

Put your thumb over the hole and shake. This coats the jar with fuel and adds vapour to the air to aid ignition. If everything is going well, the jar will make a sort of sucking noise when you take your thumb off the hole.

Stand the jar of a heat-proof surface (it will get really hot), wipe spilled meths off the top and light it.

If the jet works, and you want to use it more than once, don't let it run too long. Extinguish it by dropping a spare lid over the hole of the jet - let it cool before you pick it up!

If you get one running, add a video to the comments. One day, in the distant future, I'll make one out of metal and add a fuel-feed. I wonder how loud it will be...

I made one in a plastic gatorade bottle. It works but of course plastic melts so i only do it in short bursts. I use nitro gas and it works great!

I can't seem to find meth online...is there a substitute? Awesome though...

Ohhh, okay! I had wondered when you said "meths" if it was a typo and referring to methamphetamines... Methanol makes sense though. Yellow Heet (antifreeze used in fuel lines) is essentially pure methanol.

Is that the same as methyl hydrate, the stuff found in the paint section of the store but also labelled stove alcohol? That's what I have seen it called in Canada, anyway.

I don't know.

I don't live in Canada but I have friends who do...I will ask.

You should order online:)

Wow! You're in the UK! I didn't notice how you wrote millilitres until I read your featured author article. I was hoping I could meet you...

If you choose to fly to the states, I'd avoid flying into Denver CO or Detroit MI. Try one of the smaller airports we've got. The big ones tend to have a large percentage of idiots. Too much personal experience with them. Honolulu int'l is nice though, if you're looking to see the islands.

It isn't too healthy though...and bitter.

Love this. And great videos of it working.

I might try it with a treacle tin - that way maybe it won't explode in a shower of broken glass when it gets hot!
Sep 17, 2011. 4:42 AMuberdum05 says:
And the lid off the treacle tin could act as a pressure release valve in case you make the hole too small, the lid could just... pop off...

What do you mean by "meths"?
Jul 30, 2007. 9:44 AMTCPMeta says:
All I was able to find was meth, methadone and methamphetamine. Took me a good 30 minutes to find out it was Methylated spirit

Quite like a Doodlebug noise! I like your instructables, not sure how you discovered all these experiments though. I've only made one instructable so far.

Cool, keep it up.
