Introduction: Beeswax Sushi Candles

These California roll and tuna roll beeswax candles are fun to display around your house or give as wedding favors!

Step 1: Materials

  • Beeswax honeycomb sheets (black, white, light pink, dark pink, green, red)
  • Wick
  • Ruler
  • Knife
  • Blow dryer

Step 2: California Roll: Crab Meat

For the crab meat for the California roll candles you will need 1 inch strips of light pink, dark pink, and white beeswax. Cut these strips finely (so that you have a lot of thin 1 inch strips) and then squish them together with your fingers.

Step 3: California Roll: Cucumber/Avocado

For the cucumber or avocado pieces, you will need 1 inch strips of white and green beeswax.

Start at one end of the strips and use your blow dryer to heat the wax, making the wax softer and easier to roll. Make sure that you roll the strips tightly.

Cut the rolls of green and white in half. Then stick one half of the green roll together with one half of the white roll. Form the new roll into a teardrop shape.

Step 4: California Roll: Assembly

Cut a piece of wick about 1.5 inches long. Place the wick on the crab meat and place the cucumber pieces on top. Squish everything together with your fingers. You may need to use your blow dryer to help stick everything together. Make sure the wick has good contact with the wax.

Cut 1 inch strips of black wax to be used as the nori (seaweed). Place the filling at one end of the nori strip and roll. Remember to use your blow dryer. Leave about an inch of nori unrolled.

Cut 1 inch strips of white wax to be used as the rice. Fold over 1 inch of the rice strip. Place the folded end on top of the 1 inch of nori you left unrolled. Now roll the whole thing, using your blow dryer as you go. If your wax strips are too small, you can always just attach another piece and continue rolling.

Step 5: Tuna Roll

For the tuna roll:

Cut 1 inch strips of red wax to be used as tuna. Place a 1.5 inch wick at one end of the red strip. Roll the wax tightly around the wick. Form the roll into more of a square shape with your fingers.

Cut 1 inch strips of white wax to be used as rice. Roll the white wax around the tuna.

Cut 1 inch strips of black wax to be used as nori. Roll the black wax around the rice.

Remember to roll tightly and use your blow dryer when you are rolling the wax.

Step 6: Done!

Cut the wicks so that they are about 1/4 - 1/2 inch above the wax.

Display the candles on sushi plates or package them in take-out boxes to give as gifts or wedding favors!

These are really cool! All I have to say is that they seem to be weak. Did you ever think of melting some beeswax pellets to put a thin layer over it to hold it in place?

Thanks! They should be fine if there is good contact between the wax and the wick and they are rolled tightly.
