In this instructable I will show you how to make better then Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. This easy heart shape peanut butter cup recipe is sure to impress your friends and family and of course your special someone. These treats are perfect for Valentines Day! And they totally taste better then Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, don't believe me? Give it a try and compare for yourself. They are super simple to do, if I can do it you can do it! Let's get started!

Step 1: Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • Heart Shaped Mold
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. to 2 tsp. of melted butter (unsalted)
  • 1/2 tsp. of salt
  • Chocolate! (I like to use milk chocolate bars, and dark chocolate, but you can use chocolate chips, and chocolate candy melts as well.) Start with 1 to 2 bars or 4.4 to 8.8 oz (124 to 148 g). You can always melt more chocolate, and if you have some left over after your peanut butter mixture is used up, just dip some fruit in it. :)

Step 2: The Mold

First you need some kind of Heart-Shaped Mold. If you click on that, it will take you to one similar to the one I have. There are all kinds of different ones though. Step 3: Add Ingredients and Mix

Now let's add all of our ingredients together in a bowl and mix them with a spoon. Leave a little bit of the powdered sugar left over. About 2 tablespoons worth.

Step 4: Add More Sugar As Needed

We want our consistency to be like play dough. Not very sticky. If the peanut butter mixture is still too sticky add the rest of the powdered sugar, or a little bit more even if necessary. When you are done you should be able to pick it up and squish it around in your hand like play dough.

Step 5: Melt, Fill, Tap

Next we melt our chocolate. I am using milk chocolate candy bars for mine, but you can use chocolate chips, or chocolate candy melts, or any color of candy melts. Candy melts work great for these, especially if you want to leave them at room temperate, for like a party, because they won't get soft on you. Normal candy bar chocolate, unless tempered, will get soft on you. I prefer the taste of the candy bars, so normally I just store them in the fridge. However, I have made them plenty of times with chocolate candy melts and they still taste super yummy. So onto melting the chocolate, melt them in the microwave or use a double boiler. In the microwave melt the chocolate on high for 30 seconds, then stir with a spoon, then 30 seconds again, then stir, then about 10 seconds, and the chocolate should be melted. Scoop a heaping tsp. of melted chocolate into each mold. Then give it a tap on the counter or table to level out the chocolate.

Step 6: Add Peanut Butter and Cover

Now we add our peanut butter mixture. I do a rough heart shape with some of the peanut butter and then place it on top of the chocolate. Try not to let the peanut butter mixture touch the sides of the mold. Then cover with chocolate, about the same amount as you use to cover the bottom. If you see any high spots of peanut butter, just use your spoon to gently move some of the chocolate over it, to cover it completely. Give it a good tap. Now you are ready to place them in the fridge too cool and set for about 30 minutes.

Step 7: Remove and Eat!

Now once they have chilled and set, remove them from the molds. They should come out fairly easy. You can tug gently on the sides of the mold to help them release if needed. If you notice on one of them, you can see on the side, where the peanut butter was touching the wall. It won't effect the taste though, just how it looks. There we go! Homemade Peanut butter cups Hearts! Yummy! In my humble opinion these blow away store bought ones any day of the week and twice on Tuesday. Go make your own! If you don't want to get a mold, just use paper cups and a muffin pan and make classic shaped ones. :)

Hi Matt. <br>I'm keen to try out your recipe. Did you include the quantity of chocolate required? <br>(I may have missed it because my brain has trouble 'reading' text from screens - compared to paper.)
Nope I totally missed that. haha It really doesn't matter because you can always melt more chocolate as needed. Generally I start with one standard chocolate bar. The ones that are like 4.4 oz or 120ish g. But I wind up making a lot. haha If you go half and half with chocolate chips, I tend to do about a cup of chocolate chips to one bar ratio which works well. Or you could just start with 1 cup of chocolate chips. Hopefully that helps. haha :)
