Introduction: Bike Hanging Rack

Bike hanging rack on the cheap...

Step 1: Materials

I used 2x3 boards for uprights and base, and a 2x4 for the top horizontal piece.

Then gathered pallet wood and other spare wood i had in my wood junk yard.

Lastly i bought some small baseboards (i think 3/8" x 1-1/2" (2) pieces 7' long each

Step 2: Build and Secure Frame

I built the frame and screwed it to the rafters in my garage. I can also be screwed to studs

Step 3: Back Boards

I sanded, stained and varnished the boards.

Step 4: Mount Boards

I chose not to mount or screw the horizontal boards to anything, and decided to leave them floating on the wall. So secured them using vertical "stop plates" on each side.

Step 5: Hang Bikes

Thats it, all thats left to do is hang the bikes

I used some heavy duty hooks from home depot for just a few bucks each

How much distance is there between the hangers? Thanks in advance! :)

This is actually already on my weekend plans except that I'm using two five foot long one foot wide boards and Delta Leonardo Bike hooks to hang five bikes. Be careful hanging the mountain/hybrid bikes from the front fork stretching the shocks during storage. I plan to reverse bikes; the ones without shocks get the hook and the ones with will hang from the back tire. Alternating handlebars should allow them to be closer together.
But I do love the "paneling" created with the extra boards and the additional vertical hooks. - crossing my fingers it works...

I like the different back boards, it looks like a great way to use up some interesting different bits of wood I have laying around.

Wouldn't a bed frame with slats from a single bed be an easier solution?

Nice project. One could probably use re-purposed wood from pallets for this.

One hint -- most bicycles are stolen from homes. I lock up my bike at home. Residential burglars don't necessarily carry bolt cutters with them.

Nice work! The multi-colored boards add an interesting visual touch. I like it.
