Introduction: Blueberry Player Pin Pie
Attention all yoctograms! Its time for pie!
Blueberry pie to be exact. This is my delicious recipe for creating a blueberry pie. And since I made the pie, I might as well have modeled it after everyones favorite Reaper from "The World Ends With You". Thats right, Sho Minamimoto, A.K.A. "Pi Face". Dedicated fans of the game may already realize that the pie represents the Player Pin. I just have to bring out that creating a pie to look like the Leo pin would be a lot less recognizable.
This recipe is recommended for those who are familiar with the kitchen and baking. You don't have to be an expert by any means. You do have to know the basics though. Just follow the instructable and you will have a wonderful pie that will satisfy all. Of course, this recipe was created just to my liking, so I am open to any changes or criticism that may make the pie even better.
Any pie can fill the stomach, Mine will fill the Soul!
Step 1: Hardware
For this instructable you will need:
1 9" Pie Tin
1 Medium Sized Sauce Pan
1 Large Spoon (Not Wooden)
1 Cutting Board
1 Sharp Knife
1 Rolling Pin
1 Pizza Cutter (Optional)
Don't use a wooden spoon unless you want it to be purple afterwards. Remember, Blueberries stain. The Pizza Cutter is optional but makes the cosmetic work on the pie a lot easier.
In addition to all of this you will need to print and cut a paper model of the reaper symbol. A sample of which is provided in the last picture. Just make sure that the skull, from top to bottom, is about 8"
Step 2: The Dough
For the dough you will need:
2 1/2 Cups of All Purpose Flour
3/4 Cup of Butter
1 Tbs of Shortening
1 Tsp of Sugar
6 Tbs of Ice Water
1/4 Tsp of Salt
Combine all of the dry ingredients then add the shortening. After it is throughly mixed, chop in the butter. Add the water slowly. Don't let the butter completely mix in with the dough. At this point there should be spots in the dough that are just butter. Separate about 1/4 of the dough and mix this small section well. The smaller section of dough should have no butter spots and be completely mixed together. Put both sections of the dough on a paper plate, cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour. Don't worry, that leaves you plenty of enough time to get the filling ready.
Step 3: Filling
For the Filling you will need:
At least 12oz of fresh Blueberries (More would be better of course)
3/4 Cup of Sugar
3 Tbs of Corn Starch
1/4 Tsp of Salt
1 Tbs of Butter
1 Tbs of Grapefruit Juice (Fresh is Best)
1 1/2 Cups of Water
1/4 Tsp of Vanilla Extract
In a Medium Sauce Pan add all the Blueberries, Sugar and the Water then put the heat on Medium while stirring occasionally. When it begins to heat up and the Blueberries begin to blister add the Salt, Grapefruit Juice, Vanilla extract and butter. After, put the heat on low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes are up, the filling should be thicker than before, but still have the consistency of liquid. Take it off the heat and let it cool completely. To aid in this process, put the filling in the freezer or put a bag of ice under it until it is room temperature. After you will be able to stir in the cornstarch to thicken it up and a dash of cinnamon if you wish. I did not make such a wish.
Step 4: Making the Crust
After an hour or more has passed, you can take out your dough and start making the crust. However, you will want to be quick in this process as the more you handle the dough, the tougher it will be to manipulate it. Not to mention that this crust is very buttery, and we all know what happens to butter as it heats up.
Begin by getting a cutting board and covering it with a thin layer of flour. Take the bigger section of dough, the one with butter pockets, and start rolling it out until it is about 1/4 of an inch thick. Seems a little thick? We make it this thick because as the pie bakes, the butter will melt and will disperse to the rest of the pie. The dough will then fill in where the butter pockets once were. The result is a very buttery, delicious and flaky pie crust. After it is rolled out, go ahead and plop it on the pie tin. Cut off any over hanging dough and put it over the super buttery parts as it will need dough to fill in the gap when it melts. Now for the top crust. But before that, preheat your oven for 400 Degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 5: Top Crust
When making the top part of the crust, you do not need to be so quick because the butter is more immersed in the dough. However, what was said before is still true. The more you handle the dough, the more your warm little digits will heat it up and make it harder to handle. This is why I suggest having a bowl of Ice Water on hand when taking on this task.
Start by using the same meathod with the botttom crust. Put a thin layer of flour on top of the cutting board. Roll the dough out until it is about 1/4 thick. Now, remember that paper cut out of the player pin symbol you printed out ahead of time? Now is the time to use it.
Place the paper on top of the dough and use the pizza cutter first to do the heavy part. After most of it is gone, use a boning knife to do the finer work. You may also use a butter knife, but it doesn't work as well.
When you are finished, remove the paper and with your hands, manually fix any imperfections in the dough.
Step 6: Get to Baking
Now! This is your finest hour. There is no going back at this point. everything that you have done to the pie has led up to this glorious moment!
First, prepare some egg wash by combining 1 egg with 2 Tbs of milk. Then crimp the edges of the Pie with a fork.
Get a baking tray and put some wax paper on it. Then pie crust bottom on top of the tray along with the player pin symbol and wipe them both down with egg wash. Then fill the pie crust with the Blueberry filling. Put the pie in the oven for 45 minutes. The player pin symbol may have to be pulled a little before that, say 30 Minutes or until its a nice golden brown. In any case, its a good thing you preheated the oven at Step 4
Step 7: This Pie Is So Zetta Slow!!!!
Once you have pulled both the pie and the top crust out of the oven, place them on a cooling rack.
Now..... back away. Do not touch, cut or even think about the pie for at least 1 hour. As tempting as it is to cleave your way into this pie, it needs this time to cool off and let the juices solidify. If you cut it now, not only will you burn your mouth but you risk losing those precious Blueberry flavors.
Trust me, your patience will be rewarded.
Step 8: Final Touches
Once the pie has been cooled off you can gently place the top crust right in the middle.
After thats done you can:
Take a picture of it
Clench it tight and try to read peoples mind
Play "Pie Tin Slammer!!!"
Enlist to fight against Reapers
I suggest the first. If you like your pie A La Mode I would suggest French Vanilla. This recipe also works the same with Blackberries. If you are dead set of using Cooking Tapioca instead of Corn Starch, be my guest. However, you use less Corn Starch than Tapioca, and thus leaves more room for Blueberries. Flour may also be used as a thickener, but may make the pie taste like, well flour. Chances are that you will have some leftover dough. If that is the case, I am sure there are plenty other delicious pie recipes entering the contest that you should try out. On that subject, I am entering this instructable in the game.life Contest.
