I don't like the idea of attaching the book to the surface. There are bookends made of sheetmetal used at many libraries tayht use the weight of the last few books for stability. They look like a large L, about 4 to 6 inches on each dimension. One of these could be glued inside the book, Then the bookend could be adjusted or moved to anther shelf. You could also hollow out the book and add weight, like a piece of cast iron.

Visitor: I've been using this for a couple of months. The books don't get scraped unless, well, you SCRAPE the books against them. Simply place the book on top of the bracket and you will be ok.
thenickboy: The L brackets are very stable. The strength is in the fastening screws. The L brackets are simply a means of attaching to the books at a 90 degree angle. The small L brackets are also very low profile. ( _ )

I saw on some random "home show" where they sell fake books that are actually shelves - which mount with the binding out, horizontally. So your books stack up on seemingly nothing. I wonder how hard it would be to make one of those?

The L-brackets and the screws are going to scrape up the book covers of the books you place next to the bookends. Better cover them with something (duck tape, maybe). Or alternatively, attach the L-brackets so that the horizontal part is hidden under the book and the vertical part is hidden under the book cover.

I would think you could put the L-bracket just inside the book cover to prevent that from happening. Great idea though. I'd like to see bigger L-brackets (at least the side holding the book) for more stability..
