Book into a laptop case

I found the Book book laptop case online and fell in love. Untill I saw the price...

I thought that it can't be that hard to make one myself! It turned out to be relatively easy to make, at the same time a lot of fun and also I got to choose what cover I wanted. Cheap, personal, cool and you don't even need a sewing machine!

Step 1: The book

Of course you need a book for the case. I bought a used, hard cover kids book that I thought was quite funny to have as a case. Just measure your laptop and add about half an inch to both the width and heigth to have some safety space.

I used:  10 x 13 inches for my case (MacBook 13-inch screen)

The thickness of the book does not really matter since I took the cover apart and put  2 zippers all the way around. You can choose a book with a thicker spine if you want to keep it.

Step 2: What you need

Exept the book, you need:

Material

- 2 Polyester zippers (22 inches long)
- 2 sheets of sm'art foam
- 1 inch wide twill tape (2 yds. long)

Tools

- Drill
- Scissors
- Thick thread
- Sewing needles (1 small & 1 bigger)
- Glue gun with hot glue sticks

Step 3: Zipper and twill tape

Sew the zipper and the twill tape. Do the same with both zippers.

Step 4: Rip them out!

Just rip all the pages out of the book. If it is a nice book, you might want to save them from some other project. I also took the covers apart and got rid of the spine of the book because it was to thin for my laptop. If you want to get a thicker book, you can keep the spine.

Step 5: Drill the holes

Drill the holes all the way around the book. I used the smallest drill bit I had. Put the holes about 1/4 inch from the edge and a couple of milimeter apart. Since the book is empty of pages you can just put the covers together, drill all the way through and save some time (and sweat).

Step 6: Sew the zippers to the book

Sew the zippers to the book. I started in the middle of the long side because I wanted the case to open like a book. Sew one of the zippers one way, and the other one, on the other direction. Make sure to put the twill band on the same side of the zippers when sewing them to the book (picture 2).

Sew the ends together and then sew the other cover to the twill band. It is a bit tricky when it comes to attaching the second cover but open the zipper up and make sure you match the covers together so they fit together when you close it again. Start sewing at the same spot as you started to attach the first cover.

When you do this, you must pay attention to how thick your laptop is and therefore how wide the zipper and twill band have to be together. Keep in mind the thickness of the two foam sheets.

Step 7: The foam

Cut the foam into the right sixe to fit inside your case. I just randomly cut the sheets smaller untill they fit my case. Use the glue gun to attach the sheets. Watch out, it is hot and the glue dries really fast so put the glue on a bit at the time and work your way over the whole sheet.

Step 8: Done, finished and enjoy!

Noy you got your super personal and cool laptop case! It wasn't that hard, right?
