Bookmarker: Blood Is Thicker Than Water

Bookmarker: Blood Is Thicker Than Water

I like to crochet. I also like to make personalized bookmarkers for friends and family. The following is a very personal bookmarker I made (as a joke) for my daughter. It is a metal sanitary napkin with a crocheted "bloody" tampon dangle.

Everyone one who saw the finished bookmark either laughed or said, "Ewwww."

Just the reaction I wanted. ha.

Here are the steps:

1) I scanned a real sanitary napkin (new). I printed it on photo paper and cut it out with scissors.

2) I made a sheet of aluminum by cutting and flattening a soda can.

3) I used the trimmed photo of the napkin as a template to cut the shape of the metal sheet.

4) I embossed the aluminum sheet with a polka dot pattern using a die cut embosser. I used a red permanent marker to color in random dots or "blood drops."

5) I glued the photo to the metal, back to back. Punched a hole at the top for the dangle and added a red metal eyelet. I wrote the motto "Blood Is Thicker Than Water" in red marker.

6) And for the final touch, I crocheted a "bloody" tampon from white and red cotton yarns. I used the tampon's "string" (yarn) to attach it to the bookmark.
Ta dah! Gross funny? Useful trash? Life in art?? Hmmm...you decide.
