Bread Cornucopia Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Looking for the perfect centerpiece for this Thanksgiving.  This easy to make bread cornucopia will impress your guests and take little time out of your cooking schedule.

Step 1: Ingredients and Materials

3 11oz containers of refrigerated bread stick dough
Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil
2 Eggs
Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts, and other goodies to stuff in your cornucopia
Non-Stick Cooking Spray

Step 2: Shaping Foil

Cut a piece of aluminum foil 30" by 20".  Roll into a cone shape.  The open end of the cone should be 6-8".  

Stuff the cone with aluminum foil so the cone is solid.  Bend the end of the cone slightly so it looks like a cornucopia.  

If your cornucopia is not smooth, take a few strips of foil and wrap it around the cornucopia.

Spray foil with non-stick spray.

Step 3: Wrapping Dough

Roll each bread stick on a pan.

Start by wrapping one bread stick around the tip of the cornucopia.  Take the next bread stick and pinch one of its end to the end of the first bread stick.  Continue by adding bread sticks and spiraling up the cornucopia.  The bread sticks should overlap by 1/4" to 1/2".  

You can get creative with your cornucopia by breading and weaving the dough around the aluminum. 

Step 4: Baking

Mix eggs.  Glaze cornucopia with egg.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.  Check on it to make sure it doesn't burn.


Step 5: Create Centerpiece

Add vegetables, fruits, nuts, and more to complete the centerpiece.

Didnt realize this was two years old lol. Making this tonight in preparation for tomorrow. Instead of a shelf dough im using challah dough that i got from my job (a traditional "from scratch" bread bakery. It should turn out nicely. Im gonna post the picture even though the contest was over years ago ;)

WOW what a hit this cornucopia was. Thank you for the easy step by step instructions....I actually found this on another site first but when I continued to search came across your site and was glad to see how easy you made it look. So I gave it a shot. My daughter actually came into the kitchen while I was beginning it and found such an interest in it she helped, she actually almost did the entire project on her own....It was the highlight of the holiday.....from the time i brought it in to the time I left everyone was still talking about it...My sister even asked me to make one for an upcoming party she is having...Thanx again and look forward to using your site and what you have planned for Christmas projects.....R.C.

Looks awesome, and I'm so happy to hear your daughter had a fun time making it!
I saw this and loved it. However my version was not a center piece. I made mini ones that people could put their food into and eat it together.
How did it go over with the guest? My mother said cute. My boyfriend thought it was awesome. And my grandma was relived because her oven would not didn't finish her rolls till after the meal was over.

I included a picture of my bread cornucopia. I made it for my housemates and they were all really impressed. I also made my butternut squash soup (http://www.instructables.com/id/Vegan-Butternut-Squash-Soup/) so people were able to break off pieces of the cornucopia and dip it in the soup.

This was an awesome project! My daughter and I baked it the night before and had it ready for the family gathering! Everyone was utterly impressed and asked for the website! Ah ha! Instructables we said! We loved the way it looked and then "gobbled" it down with the fondu! Really fun project and not so hard to do!

We had a great time with this and I was able to spend some time with my niece at this special family occasion. Everyone really liked the project and it looked super great on the table. We also took the time to make the dough from scratch. And, yes we ate it afterword..

we made one! we had to use crescent rolls because we couldn't find breadsticks, but we just cut them into strips so it looked more cornucopia-like. After we took the foil out the inside was still a little soggy so I put it back into the oven for a few minutes to dry itself out a little bit. My daughter filled it with apples, carrots, turnips, celery, potatoes, garlic, onions, dates, apples, grapes, dates.. everyone loved it!

I was feeling lazy and unrolled a pizza crust and covered my mold. I cut the  excess off the sides and used that to twist to do the edge of the opening.  Not *as* pretty, but it was super fast and turned out great! Total prep time under 15 minutes, with a 30 minute cook time! 

The pizza crust idea would be IDEAL for young kids! =)

I DID make this for Thanksgiving & it was a great surprise centerpiece for my mother! I didn't buy anything special to stuff in it except some mini pumpkins. I used everything I had right in the fridge & it looked great! I used an apple, some grapes, couple of carrots, some clementines....My mother was so surprised. My computer isn't working so hot, or I would have uploaded a pic.

To add to the overall appearance- i found a pretty (seasonal ) rectangle fabric placemat, to cover the large serving platter I used!

These last a long time too- I think ours hung around for a month before I told my husband he could take it away. It never molded or wilted-It still looked great- SO THEY CAN BE MADE IN ADVANCE & STILL LOOK PERFECT!

WE LIVE NEAR THE WOODS, SO WHEN WE WERE DONE WITH IT, WE DONATED IT TO THE WILD ANIMALS LOL

THANKS FOR THE IDEA-***I THINK IT WAS THE BEST INSTRUCTIONS I HAVE USED YET FROM INSTRUCTABLES & IT REALLY LOOKED SO AWESOME!**** NOBODY COULD FIGURE OUT HOW I DID IT! GENIUS!!!

I made one for Thanksgiving this year. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be as for some reason my strips kept slipping off the foil. Any suggestions as to why it wasn't sticking? I ended up placing the dough flat onto it and wrapped the best I could. It still came out wonderful and my whole family loved it. But sure would love to know if anyone else has had the same problem.
Mine didn't "stick" to the FOIL, but you need to really stick the strips together, I made sure mine overlapped by atleast an inch & pressed them together. This project does work great!

Thanks for sharing your cornucopia recipe.
My daughter did a dinner for about twenty five people. I took a cornucopia, and it was the hit of the evening.
Most especially, my grand daughters think that I’m the clever one. If I were honest I would have given you the credit.
The only problem was that it looked so good everyone thought it was a decoration, and no one ate the bread or the fruit.

Hope you don't mind me adding a pic of how mine turned out. I used homemade dough as opposed to store bought, but only because my budget was already stretched paper thin and I had the ingredients on hand. The final product garnered many "oohs" and "aahs". Thank you so much for the detailed, picture-filled instructions!!!

My cornucopia was a hugeee hit. I bought crescents instead of breadsticks by accident, and only 2, but it still turned out beautiful... just a little smaller. Tempting not to eat during most of the meal. Pretty and delicious.

Kudos on an EXCELLENT Instructable. Found this in the nick of time as all my attempts at a new bread for Thanksgiving dinner have failed... this will certainly go over well. Will let you know how it turns out.
