Introduction: Bright Lips!

Picture of Bright Lips!

Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner! It's now time to transition from dark, heavier makeup to brighter, more cheerful colors. What better way than wearing a bold lip?

Step 1: Things You'll Need

Picture of Things You'll Need

Products:

  • light to medium coverage foundation
  • concealer
  • setting powder
  • your normal brow products
  • assorted neutral eyeshadows
  • your favorite mascara
  • lip balm
  • a bold lip color of your choice. If you don't know what color to select, check out my Instructable!
  • a lip liner that matches your skin tone or the lipstick you're using

Optional:

  • eyeshadow primer
  • foundation primer
  • blush, bronzer, or highlighter. This is optional because, for me at least, my skin is a lot redder in the summer. Cheek products tend to emphasize that.

Step 2: Prep and Prime

If you wish, apply a primer to your eyes and face.

When you prime your eyes, make sure you cover your whole lid all the way up to your brows. If you don't like primers, just use your concealer, it works about the same.

I'm using a really luminous primer just to add to the summery glow that's so desired right now. Spread it all over your face, girl!

Then, the most important step to a smooth and soft pout: a good lip balm. Apply it now so it has time to sink in before applying your lipstick.

Step 3: Get Ya Face On

Picture of Get Ya Face On

This step is purely your call. Feel free to do your foundation in the method that makes you feel the most comfortable. This is just how I do mine!

I always do my BB Cream and foundation before concealer, so let's start with that. Place a few dots of BB Cream on to each cheek, one on the chin and nose, and two on the forehead. Use circular blending motions to buff it into your skin. Then, I use the exact same method with a layer of foundation for a little extra coverage.

When you're finished, set your foundation with powder. Unless, of course, you use a powder foundation.

The blush I'm using leans more toward shimmer than actual color. I'm patting it onto the high points of my cheekbones very gently with a fluffy brush. Make sure that when you apply blush or bronzer over foundation you do so very lightly in a patting motion. Rough circular motions or sweeping can disturb the product underneath it.

Then, conceal any red spots or dark circles with a good concealer. I have to use a corrective yellow one too because my dark circles have been insane lately (shoutout to you, exam week). Make sure you use your ring finger to dab and blend, as it's the most gentle finger on your hand and the heat from your body melts the product into the skin.

And you're done! Now on to the eyes...

Step 4: Keep It Simple, Sweetie

Picture of Keep It Simple, Sweetie

Generally, if you're wearing a bold lip it's best to keep your eyes neutral. But, like I always say, makeup has no rules. Please wear whatever you feel the most comfortable in!

During the spring and summer, I love a shimmery neutral eye. It's youthful, playful, and super mistake-proof.

First, define your crease with a warm brown matte shade. I like to do the crease first so it's totally matte; if I do my lids first the shimmer tends to mix in with the matte crease color. Make sure it's blended well. (Matte brown shade in BH Palette)

On the lids, lay down a shimmery champagne color on the inner half of your eyes. For the most precision, use a flat synthetic brush. For the most pigmentation, dab the shadow on with your finger. Make sure any harsh edges are blended. Then, pat a slightly darker satin color on the outer half of your lids to add definition. I like to sweep some of this color on the lower lashline.

On the browbone and tear duct, apply a light dusting of white or cream shimmery shadow to highlight your eyes and make them look more awake.

Lastly, finish off with a sweep of mascara on your top and bottom lashes.

Step 5: Fill 'Em In

Now, do your brows as you normally do. However, to balance out the simpler eyes, I recommend a stronger brow. Use whatever product you like.

I love Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pomade. With a little practice, you can master the art of flawless brows and keep them strong or soft. I'm loading up an angled brush with the pomade and filling in the tail ends of my brows. I then use whatever is left to fill in the inner portion. Make sure you define the lower border of your brows to keep with the strong, defined look. If you don't have the brow pomade, here's a tip: an ashy (cool toned) brown gel eyeliner works just the same, sometimes even better! I like Maybelline's gel eyeliner for my brows.

Then, I set the tail ends with powder and comb them out with tinted brow gel.

Step 6: Lips!

Now, since finding a purple pencil to go with my purple lipstick was a bit difficult, I'm sticking with a nude pencil that's a shade darker than my skin tone.

First, I'm outlining my lips very very carefully. Bright colors look best when they're precise! Then, I'm blending the lipliner down into my lips to diffuse it a bit.

Next, sweep one coat of your lip color on your lips. Be careful when applying, as you want it to look clean and sharp. Give it a second to set, then kiss a tissue to blot. Reapply, then blot again.

Put some gloss over it if you like. Personally, I think that gloss over lipstick makes it slip and slide a lot easier, so I like to stick with a satin or matte finish. If you want to use gloss, pat just a tiny bit in the center of your bottom lip. This brings dimension and makes your lips look fuller.

And you're done!
