First thing - get the forks right. The look of the bike is defined by the forks.

First things first:
1. Dismantle the front end of the bike - remove the handlebars, the stem, the headset and finally remove the forks.

2. Position the bike so that the headset is at a nice ride height. Don't worry about the angles at this stage.
Make a measurement on how long the forks should be. (pic 1)

You can see I've set up the bike on a bench at about the right height. I've measured the distance from the top of the headset to the front wheel's axle. It comes to about 4 feet! Wow, this is going to be a long bike.

I'm lucky enough to have a pipe warehouse in town - I picked up an 8 foot long steel pipe for £2 (UK) / $4 (US)

3. Next, I cut the steel pipe in half with an angle grinder. Stand the two pipes vertically and use the grinder on the ends so that they're exactly the same length. (pic 2)
