Build a Simple Auto-watering System From Recycled Products

I'd like a way to easily (and cheaply) water my tomatos via a drip system. I built simple waterers using 2 and 3 liter bottles and wire hangers. My total cost outlay for this project was $1.16 for the drill bits.

Watering rates:
3-liter bottle: approx 48 minutes
2-liter bottle: approx 25 minutes

Step 1: Collect Your Supplies

1. Empty 2 or 3 liter bottles (rinse them before you start or this project gets kind of sticky in the middle)
2. Wire hangers
3. Box cutter or razor blade
4. Scissors sharp enough to cut plastic
5. Wire cutters
6. 1/16" Drill Bit
7. Drill

Step 2: Cut the Bottom Off the Bottle

1. Poke a starter hole in the base of the bottle with the box cutter or razor blade. This should be about 2-1/2 inches from the bottom of the bottle right where the bottle shape changes.
2. With the scissors, cut the bottom off of the bottle.
3. Save the bottoms for seed starting or dishes for screws, nuts, bolts, etc.

Step 3: Punch Holes for the Hanger

1. Using the hole punch, punch a hole in the bottle about 1/2" from the newly cut edge.
2. Punch a second hole on the other side of the bottle at the same depth from the edge.

Step 4: Create the Hanger

1. Using the wire cutter, cut through the hanger, middle of the long straight area at the bottom of the hanger.
2. Staighten out the arms of the hanger so they point down.
3. Insert one arm into each hole of the bottle and bend the ends so the bottle is secure.
