Step 2Materials

Materials
To build one full set of pieces, you will need:
- Six 1" x 8" x 8' planks of wood ( whatever kind of wood you prefer. If you can afford it, I highly recommend Red Oak or Rosewood). This totals to about 48' . This is enough to make all of the pieces with a few feet leftover for mistakes. *Always plan for mistakes!!!*
- Wood Putty (preferably one similar to the color of the wood, it's next to the stain at Lowe's or Home Depot)
- Wood Glue (but only if you want the thing to stay in one piece)
- Sandpaper, 220 grit.
- A stain and varnish (polyurethane) of your choice, as well as cloths/brushes and such to go with it. (more on stains to use later) or paint, if you prefer.
- A nail gun with nails long enough to hold the pieces together at a 90 degree angle ( 1 1/4" worked great)
- Table saw
- Miter (mitre) saw (this isn't totally necessary, but is but will come in extremely handy for some of the pieces)
- Possibly other things I am forgetting right now.
- You will of course need transportation for the wood as well. Hopefully if you don't have a truck, you at least have a sunroof like me. Don't let the pieces sit in there like that for very long, or they will warp.

my corolla doesn't have a sunroof, but when i fold down the back seats and push the front passenger seat forward, i'm able to fit boards up to 8' long with the trunk closed.  i'm pretty sure that's what i would do even if i had a sunroof.  makes me miss my old sonata.  it had a sunroof.

anyway, good instructable.  i've already purchased the wood i'll be using (cheapy whitewood, but it'll be ok) and i hope to get my shelves finished this week.  thanks!

Yeah, it isn't too difficult to fit large objects into a Corolla.  My mom used to have one.  And we used it to move into my dorm room when I started college.  Fridge and all, it only took one trip!

What is fun is trying to fit long pieces of wood into my Yaris.  I have some pictures of my car after hauling wood and pipe for my green screen project.

hahaha no offense but i like to laugh at people who don't have access to trucks for these purposes. Once i saw a a guy carrying dual pane windows on top of his car, no ropes or nothing they were holding it with their hands lol

hahaha no offense but i like to laugh at people who don't have access to cars and have to use a truck to go from one place to another. (More than) once i saw a guy carrying himself around in a 5,000 pound 9-passenger minibus and driving it like it was a race truck lol

Gee, isn't that what the hole in the roof is for??? (lumber, surfboards, ladders) The strange looks from observers is directly proportional to the expense of the vehicle : D
