Build a Fully Functional 1x2x2 Rubik's Cube Out of Cardboard

Introduction: Build a Fully Functional 1x2x2 Rubik's Cube Out of Cardboard

In this Instructable I will teach you how to build a fully functional 1x2x2 Rubik's cube. It's mechanism is based of of a Rubik's brand 2x2x2 cube.  A standard Rubik's cube is a 3x3x3 cube and is 57mm along every edge. This puzzle is 1x2x2 and it is 8 in. x 8 in. x 4 in. This puzzle has only 6 possible different combinations so it is extremely easy to solve.

Note: most of the time I will not say much in the description of the step and will point out most of everything in the pictures.

Note: If you see anything in the picture that doesn't match up with what I say, it is because I made something, took a picture of it, and then later realized that it was wrong, and couldn't go back and take another picture. Do what I tell you to do and not what the pictures show, unless what I tell you to do isn't very specific.

If you make your own, post a picture of it in the comments, and tell me how good it works.

Watch me demonstrate it here:

Step 1: Materials

The materials you are going to need for this project:
1. some form of cardboard
2. 6 different colors of paper or posterboard (white, yellow, green, blue, orange, red.) (for making the "stickers")
3. glue: liquid glue and glue stick
4. a chopstick
5. packing tape

Tools that you are going to need:
1. scissors and or x-acto knife
2. paper cuter
3. compass
4. a protractor (to make sure your cardboard is square)
5. a ruler (not shown)
6. a pen/pencil (not shown)
7. a dremel tool with a small bit

Step 2: Cutting the Cardboard

Steps 2-4 will be about cutting the material to make all of the materials the right size. Steps 5-10 will be about assembling it all. This step is all about cutting the cardboard.

Step 3: Cutting the Paper

This step is for cutting the paper for the "stickers". Cut 4 yellow squares, 4 white, 2 orange, 2 red, 2 green, and 2 blue. Cut each square so that they are 3.5 in. at each edge.

Step 4: Cutting and Gluing the Chopstick

This step explains the cutting and gluing of the chopstick. This will be the core when you're done.

Step 5: Gluing on the Stickers

Now it's time to glue on the stickers. Pretty simple.

Step 6: Assembly, Part 1 (the Inner Edge Pieces)

Now that your done making the individual parts, it's time to tape and glue the whole thing together. We'll start with the inner edge pieces (these will be hidden from view in the finished product).

Step 7: Assembly, Part 2 (the Cubies)

Now it's time to assemble each of the cubies (each of the indifidual cubes) we'll start with the first one. This will be the fixed cubie.

Step 8: Assembly, Part 3 (the Cubies)

Let's continue the building of the cubies. now let's do the next one.

Step 9: Assembly, Part 4 (the Cubies)

Now let's continue with the 3rd cubie.

Step 10: Assembly, Part 5 (the Cubies)

now it is time build the last cubie.

Step 11: How to Take It Apart/reassemble It

This is how to take it apart. To assemble it just look at the pictures in reverse order.

    Well so good 5 stars

Can you stack two together to make a 2x2x2 cube?

no. The way the mekanism is you could not, but you could take the same idea and make a 2x2x2

Awesome build! Bravo figuring out the rotational mechanism.
