Introduction: Build the Trophy Stand - Craft
Step 1: Introduction
This project will walk through the process of building a Stanley Cup trophy stand that you can build if you don't have access to a 3D printer. Later in the project you will place your wiring under and inside the trophy stand.
In the images you can see the black 3D printed trophy stand that will be replicated.
Let's get started!
Step 2: Materials
Foam core (170mm x 70mm)
Hot glue gun
Step 3: Measure and Mark Location for Cuts
You can start this project by laying out many of the cut lines in the first step.
Locate your foam core board (170mm x 70mm) and mark a line at 50mm from the end. This rectangle will become the top of the trophy stand.
Continue measuring from the line you just created and mark 5 more line each 20mm away from the previous. I have labeled the image to show the purpose of each section.
2 of the 20mm section will be the side walls 2 more will be trimmed to make the end walls The supprt section will be chopped up to create supports Have you ever heard of the phrase "Measure twice, cut once"? This would be a great time to heed that advice. After you have measured and marked your lines, measure them one more time....just to double check yourself.
Once you have double checked your measurements, you can begin cutting along those lines to split the parts.
Set the parts aside and we will come back to them in a bit, when we start putting the stand together.
Step 4: Cut Supports
Grab one of the 70mm x 20mm pieces you just cut. You will use thsi to create supports you will use while you are putting everything together.
You will need 4 support pieces, each 5mm wide and 20mm long.
From the end of the foam core, measure and mark 4 lines each 5mm apart.
Wrap up by cutting along those lines to create the support pieces and then set them aside.
Step 5: Trim End Boards
Pull two more of the 70mm x 20mm pieces. We will trim these down to become the end boards.
Trim each of the end walls to 40mm x 20mm and then set the pieces aside.
Step 6: Cut Trophy Opening
The last step before you start putting everything together is to add the opening in the top of the stand. This opening is where you will place your trophy after you score a goal to light the lamp.
Locate your compass and set it to 15mm, which will create a 30mm circle.
Grab the large foam core piece (70mm x 50mm).
Measure 25mm from the end and 25mm from the side to locate the center point of the circle.
Use this point as the center point for your compass and draw a circle for the opening.
Use your X-Acto knife to cut out the circle.
When you are finished with this step you should have 10 separate pieces that you can use to create the trophy stand.
Step 7: Glue Supports
You are now ready to begin putting your stand together.
Start by gluing the four supports to the circle at equal distances from one another.
Make sure to line up the supports to the bottom of the circle so they sit flat on the table top.....be careful not to glue the parts to the table.
Step 8: Glue Supports and Circle to Bottom of the Large Foam Core Section
Next glue the tops of the support posts to the top of the trophy stand. Because you glued the supports to the outside of the circle the supports should very closely match the circle in the top of the stand.
Place glue on the top of each of the supports and then flip the circle and supports to glue them to the top of the stand.
As the glue begins to set try to push the supports away from the hole so none of the support is hanging out into the opening.
Remember: this opening is where the trophy will go. If the supports hang into the opening your trophy may not fit properly.
Step 9: Glue Walls On
Almost done. Now you can glue the walls around the edges.
Start by gluing one of the long side walls on.
Next repeat the process for both of the end walls.
Finish up closing the box by adding the other side wall.
Step 10: Cut Wire Opening
The final step is to cut a small 5mm x 5mm opening on the end wall opposite from the stand opening.
It doesn't matter exactly where the opening is located, but I placed mine near the center of the stand.
Step 11: Test the Fit
Congratulations! You made it!
The final step is to test the fit of the trophy.
If the trophy doesn't fit just right you can take a minute to do any final trimming or clean up to help the fit.
In the next lesson you will learn to light up your craft!
