Build your own Steampunk USB -Disk

USB hard disk are mostly not very pretty ;-).
They are made of plastics, aluminium, rubber coated or painted in red or blue. :-(

If you don't like those stuff and if you like to have your individual hard disk for your personal date than build your own.

It is easy!

Step 1 What do you need?

• a hard disk (may be SATA)
• a SATA / USB Case (you only need the electronics)
• 1,5 mm plywood
• some 10mm x 10mm strips of wood
• some brass screws
• brass profile 10mmx1mm
• some nice applications to make it individual

Love it. But how did you made the conections. Does it work now as an USB external HDD or you have to connect it to sata?

It is an external USB - Drive. In step 4 last picture you can see the the mini USB port from the SATA / USB bridge.

I saw that , but how does it connect to your computer? do you plug it in you USB or in you SATA? And if I have an internal SATA HDD, can I modify it to work as an external one and plug it in the USB?

Sorry for the late reply. The connection is via an USB cable to the USB Port of your computer. Inside my case is a normal, internal SATA Disk. I disassembled a standard empty external USB hard disk case. Like THIS .
If you are using such a case, you can use any 2,5´´ SATA HDD for this.
The little PCB, you cab see on one of the pictures is the SATA to USB bridge.
The power consumption (electronics and HDD) is little enough so it can be driven by only one USB port.
