Step 3The Chest Piece

The Chest Piece
Basically it's trial and error for sizing.

Take a box, slide it over your body like a sock and guess how much needs to be cut to fit perfectly around your chest without counting your arms into the space. Cut out 2 big holes on the sides and try it on again. Most times your guess will be spot and won't need redoing.

Cut a vertical opening in the back so you can enter and exit easily.

Close off the top and cut out a big head hole. (Cut it a little larger than your head so your shoulder/neck muscles will fit through it better. (You may notice that while a box is perfectly happy to have all 90 degree angles, our shoulders aren't built that way. The have a little bit of a downward "V" shape)

Duct tape all interior bends. This reinforcement will become invaluable as you work the suit and tears begin to reveal themselves.

Hahaha, tell me about it!

I had to fit a length of straws (a la me when I was 5) into the helmet so I could drink.

Here is my finished product.  One whole week of work for about an hour or so of trick or treating.  But he loved it and was playing the part while we were walking around.  You probably can't tell but my boyfriend added LED lights to the body of it.  Thanks for creating such an awesome costume and posting instructions on how to make it!!

Thanks for the help.  And no I was not being sarcastic, it was justhard for me to tell.  I am more of a hands on person.  But themore that I look at it the more I understand how it works.  I amgoing to have to scale this way down.  I am making it for my 5 yearold son.  Going to start tonight and work all the way to halloween.

what size box did you use to make the chest? i can't really find a big enough box to make the chest size.

I've made 3 chest pieces thus far. Each one way better than the last. However, I still can't get the proportions right, which is crucial for a decent looking design. Are these the final dimensions of the chest 'box'?

the open part is that bottom of the box.
