Introduction: Building a Faux Fireplace.

My wife wanted a fireplace in our living room, but since I didn't want to spend the money to have a real fireplace installed we decided I could build her one with an electric fireplace, an old table and some extra wood I already had.

Step 1: Start With an Old Wooden Table

I used an old wooden dining room table. I liked the design of the legs and it gave enough room for pictures and decorations on top.

I cut it down using my circular saw to 15" deep. (All measurements should be made to fit how you might want it though. Your electric fireplace may be different than mine so shelves should be made to fit.)

After it was cut to size, I then spray painted it black.

Step 2: Next Build the Shelves.

Like I said earlier, you really need to decide for yourself on the diminsions you will use.  I used some 1 X 10 's I had left over from a previous project.  The depth was right, so I measured the fireplace, my dvd player, and some of the pictures and decorations I knew my wife wanted to put on it, I used those measurements to determine the sizes of the openings.

Once I had all my measurements, I cut the shelves to size and spray painted them black, and screwed them together.

After they were all screwed together I used some 1 X 2 's to trim out the front.  They were just nailed on with some finish nails.

Step 3: Putting It All Together

Once the shelves were done, I put the fireplace in from the rear, and laid the table in front to line up the legs with the shelves.

Step 4: Attach the Shelves to the Table Top.

I screwed the two pieces together with just a couple of wood screws inside where they would not be seen.  Unless you are laying on your back looking at the inside of my fireplace. (Not too many people do that though!!)

Step 5: Decorate and Enjoy!!!

I let my wife handle the decorating.  She's much better at that than I am!!!  But we ALL enjoy the fireplace!!
