Building a Medieval Gauntlet

Step 11 Finish it off

I didn't have time to finish the gauntlet, but I'm going to try to dye the glove black. I will also potentially add some paintings to the plates. I'll add some photos if it works out. If it doesn't then I'll claim I forgot or something...

Good luck with your projects, I will eventually be posting instructables for the rest of my suit of armor. But don't hold your breath, these things take a while. If you guys have any suggestions please comment, I'll add them to the instructable!!

hey mate, do you reckon theres a way to make it able to stop say a knife or something? like hanging materials and the like .... just curious. thanks

 If aesthetics are not a problem you could just buy some kevlar gloves or the mitts from a shark proof suit thing.

 If you want something close to the real thing, use some high carbon steel, stainless steel rivets, have the fingertips shorter, and double up plates on parts that jut out when you make a fist and the fingertips. Also, using a leather sheet cut out in a hand pattern and then some heavy straps to connect to your hands can add some extreme durability and strength.
As far as stopping a blade goes, just make sure that everything overlaps when your hand is flat and that you have some crazy angles when your hand is in a fist so that the leather or glove is unreachable.

The first idea that comes to mind is to simply use thicker steel. The problem with that is that once you start adding heavier steel, the gloves might now be able to hold it. You may also have to use stronger fasteners. I'm not sure if this design is viable to serious combat, but if you're using it for safety, and it doesn't have to survive repeated vicious assult. It could work to protect you in a shop type environment. They're a little clumsy though because of the way the finger tips stick out past your fingers.

Yo, I've started building a chest plate, I've started an instructible on it. But there's so many detail things to explain that it's taking for-ever. There's so many little steps that you don't even think about while your doing it. Like fixing a piece here, or making an extra bend there. Maybe next week I'll post a work in progress instructable.

awesome dude! :D my girlfriend and i already discussed this project, and we want to do a midieval theme for Halloween this year. i want to make an entire suit of armor like this, so hurry and make more armor instructables! :D and again, great job!

nice job, deathcapt! this is a great project if you have some time on your hands or you just want to have some fun. I tried and i absolutely failed, but this is the only project in instructibles of its kind.

I'm sorry to hear that you had some trouble with the project. What exactly went wrong? You need to have the correct sized parts for it to work, especially with the rivet / washer / drill bit combo

i used the wrong sized washers, and i totally messed up cutting the designs in the galvanized steel.

Damn, that sux, The washers I can't help you with, You need the exact right size otherwise the rivets wont work. As for the steel, do everything in paper first, it's easier to work with, and a lot cheaper when you screw up. Then trace the paper onto the steel, or clamp the paper to the steel if you have hobby clamps.

Did you do anything to address the rivets inside the gloves possibly scraping or scratching your hands when in use?

Yes I did. I preserved the insulation that was in the gloves, and then put it back into the gloves once I was done plating it all. I explain it in the ible. Basically with my glove, the insulation is a glove within the glove. so I pulled out the insulation, riveted the plate to the outer shell, and then stuffed the insulation back in. The rivets aren't noticeable through the insulation. If you're glove doesn't have insulation, wear another pair underneath them. But most work gloves have some form of inner lining to make them more comfortable.

in total how much did the project cost?

It cost me about $100, but I got to keep a lot of stuff I bought about $50 worth of tools, Tin snips were $16, Hand riveter was $20, $10 paint brushes. I bought more rivets and washers than I can use ( 500 and 600 respectively), I only used about 200 rivets across both gloves. The hand riveter came with a bunch of rivets as well. So The materials in the final product were: $15 for the gloves, BUT you can get the cheaper garden / work gloves for $5, or just use an existing pair of gloves. $10 for the galvanized steel. You can use tin cans or pop cans, but you'll be limited in the size and shapes of your plates, watch for rust aswell, or scrap metal from a junk yard. $10 worth of rivets / washers. You can try to use Nails instead, and just hammer them into place. Nails are basically free compared to rivets. But it makes this project slightly more challenging. It's also probably way more likely that you've got a hammer than a riveter laying around. So like $35 worth of consumables if you go the easy way, assuming you've already go your tools. You can probably get it down to $15 if you salvage enough stuff, or even cheaper If you've got a hammer and lots of time, you can use nails instead of rivets and save some money there.
