Introduction: CNC Router Ski Storage Stand

Here is a ski storage stand that can be built from a quarter sheet of half inch plywood with just a router with a 1/4 flat or downcut bit. I used a CNC router to cut mine. This stand can be disassembled and reassembled quickly without any tools.

Step 1: Materials

Materials:
1/4 sheet 1/2 inch plywood
220 grit sandpaper
varnish

Tools

plunge router (CNC preferrred)
1/4 inch flat or downcut router bit/end mill
vibrating sander
foam or soft bristle paintbrush

Step 2: Research

1. Search the web for dimensions for ski storage stands. I found common dimensions to be 12" height by 16" depth, and 20 to 24" length. Note that very large and wide powder skis require a greater stand depth to provide the necessary stability. Short skis may require a shorter height.

2. Measure your skis to determine what dimensions you will need. Pay attention to the width of the tails and the distance between the binding and the tail. Adjust the required dimensions as needed.

Step 3: Design and Layout

Design the pieces to lock together without requiring any fasteners or glue. Determine how to layout all the pieces required so it will fit on the plywood. The grain should run in the longest direction of each piece.

Step 4: Cut

Cut the pieces out of the plywood. It is a quick job on a CNC router.

Step 5: Trim, Sand and Apply Finish

Trim off any tabs. Sand the pieces lightly, round of any edges that might get chipped during use.
Apply the varnish, sanding lightly between coats. I used a water based polyurethane.

Step 6: Assemble and Test

This is the easy part if the pieces were cut correctly. No glue of fasteners, just slide together. The design of the rack helps lock the parts into place A tight fit is a good thing as the plywood will compress a bit.

1. Try out your skis in the rack. Ensure that the rack is stable and will resist tipping over. Long wide skis, such as powder boards are the most likely to cause problems.
