Cake Fries

What's better than a nice hot and crispy french fry? Uhh, nothing, but these faux french fries made from pound cake are pretty darn tasty! With summer right around the corner, these dessert fries are the perfect addition to any bbq or summer bash. They are served with a faux Raspberry Ketchup for your dipping pleasure.  Alternatively, you can use regular red frosting.

Enjoy!

Those are some lucky kids you got there. Wish my mom made cake fries lol.

These were a visual hit at a party recently... I used strawberries (after straining out the seeds) for the 'ketchup', and took them one step further by using caramel sauce as "gravy" and cream cheese thinned with milk, sugar, and vanilla to stand in as 'ranch dressing'. I served them in those little paperboard boats lined with parchment paper.

My issue was that they break quite easily once broiled and found that while pound cake is a natural choice here for this use, I felt it was missing something; but whipped cream doesn't exactly go with french fries.

All in all, it was fun to do; and yes, they burn very quickly if you don't watch them closely. Literally, it only took 30 seconds on the top rack with the flame on high...

Thanks for the 'ible!

Another way to do this without dirtying your blender is to heat the raspberries in a non-stick skillet or saucepan over low heat. The raspberries will literally liquefy. Add the lemon and sugar (I used to add a bit of cornstarch too!). Then strain out the seeds. I used to do this all the time as a filling for chocolate cake with fudge on top. I love how easy this is, I might bring it to the next family get together they next time they want dessert!!

It's a really clever idea. Do you think it would work with home-made pound cake, though?
lmnopeas (author) in reply to suayresMay 27, 2012. 8:21 PM
Absolutely! Just make sure you chill the cake, preferably in the freezer for at least 1 hour before cutting the fries. Otherwise you risk the cake crumbling on you.

Really cool there is something like it in the book hello cupcake but they just use red frosting for ketchup. Your's is much cooler. You should try entering it in the cake decorating contest.
lmnopeas (author) in reply to rrkroseMay 24, 2012. 8:24 PM
Thanks! I don't think it would be accepted in the cake decorating contest. I just finished working on a really cool test cake and it worked out so I will try and duplicate it tomorrow and post soon. :)

I've seen faux food done before, and the thing I never liked about them is that they never look real. But these are fantastic, so realistic and I bet they taste amazing! Great job!
