Camping Style Crescent Rolls

 by buckminsterfullerene

I recently went camping at North/South Lake in the Catskill Mts. in NY with my great friend Paul, or as you may know him, AtomicTurkey27. Making Crescent Rolls while camping has always been a tradition for me and my family, so when Paul came camping with us we decided to share this essential aspect of camping with everybody! Enjoy!

WARNING: Crescent rolls are extremely addicting. Bring extra because you WILL want more...

Step 1: Go Camping, and HIKE

Go on a hike while you wait for the perfect time to make a campfire, and work up your appetite for calorie loaded crescent rolls. And take pictures of your hike. LOTS of pictures.

ok quick question being from the uk does any other uk person know of an equivalent to the cresent roll in a tube
steve_tupper2010 in reply to TechDanteDec 2, 2010. 7:13 AM
.... not that it lasts for very long. One meal and it will be gone!
steve_tupper2010 in reply to TechDanteDec 2, 2010. 7:12 AM
Techdante: dead easy. Buy a packet of frozen puff pastry, make a long thin sausage like shape out of it and wrap it around the forked stick. Long as the "sausage" is not more than 1" (2,5cm) thick, will cook ok and very tasty. You can roll it in advance and keep in in a sealed plastic bag, so that you are not fiddling around with a lump of defrosted pastry in the woods.

i would like someone to post a recipe for crescent roll DOUGH so that people can take baggies instead of cans for weight and yes i know the cans don't weigh much but still i like to carry as little weight as possible i think that is why i was under weight not on purpose its just that for some reason when i eat junk food i loose weight and when i eat healthy i gain weight i know it dosent sound true but it is
stone3408 in reply to geoslim13Aug 24, 2010. 8:55 AM
Use bisquick powder. Preseason the powder with garlic powder and herbs put it in a baggie. Mix it up (right in the baggie) with water when you get where you are going. Litle mess and easy to carry out. Glaze the outside as you are cooking with a little water and sprinkle with salt. They taste even better in the middle of no place. I cook them the way levi506 recommends.

If you're backpacking and don't want to carry a can of crescent rolls, you can use self raising flour (lighter than even the mix out of the can) and make twists. You can even use plain flour. If you add baking powder (6 cups plain flour to 3 tbls baking powder and mix well when dry) you have self raising flour. Add a pinch of salt to taste. Add jam or honey for a delicious salty/sweet treat. Backpackers start collecting the little packets when you eat out or buy a small plastic jar to transfer some jam into. Put it inside your cookware for protection. Parents, sick of your kids bouncing off the walls after eating smores? Try twists, the British smore! http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-Campfire-Twists/ Indian (sub continent) and Native American flat breads are good too if you have a pan or suitable thin rock. Navajo flat bread and honey is really good.

Why not just take the dough out of the can before hand and put it in the baggie ????? If you are worried about it sticking, a little flour dusted in the bag or on the dough before putting in the bag should keep that to a minimum.
syco123 in reply to WilmaSueOct 21, 2010. 10:46 AM
Because backpackers carry dry food when they can to reduce weight. Same result for less weight. Every ounce counts, when you save where you can your pack ends up pounds lighter. Dry flour also has an indefinite shelf life. Also a bulky can uses up precious space in you pack, while a bag of flour will mold to fit any space.

As long as you keep it cold and away from the air, otherwise the dough will rise. Or you could just pack it, the paper can weighs about 20 grams or so, nothing that can weigh you down when backpacking

YOU'RE DOING THIS THE HARD WAY. WE'VE BEEN MAKING "HOBO BISCUITS" FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. USE A NEW, GREEN, WILLOW STICK, A HALF INCH IN DIAMETER (OR A THREE FOOT LONG HALF INCH DOWEL). PEEL THE END AND WRAP A BISCUIT AROUND THE STICK. ELONGATED THE BISCUIT, PUT ONE END ON THE END OF THE STICK AND WRAP. MASHED IT TOGETHER AND BAKE OVER HOT COALS UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN. THE BISCUIT WILL EASILY PULL OFF THE STICK WHEN ITS DONE. THEN THE BEST PART, STUFF THE HOLE WITH BUTTER AND JAM. IF YOU'RE THE ADULT, YOU'LL BE LUCKY TO GET "ONE" AFTER THE KIDS ARE DONE.

Definitely try them with a marshmallow inside & a little cinnamon sugar dusted on the outside. We made them (in the oven at home) for Easter this year - if you Google "Resurrection Rolls" you can find detailed instructions, but really it's just wrapping the roll around a big marshmallow & some cinnamon sugar on top. The marshmallow totally melts & kind of soaks into the roll... now I'm all hungry...
nomij says: Aug 19, 2010. 9:07 AM
GENIUS!!! Ooo...Ooo.... How about Chocolate and MARSHMELLOW inside!! S'more Cresent Roll PLEASE (Mali-num-num :D)
buckminsterfullerene (author) in reply to nomijAug 19, 2010. 10:00 AM
I actually did give that some consideration, but was hesitant because I did not know how well the marshmallow would go with the crescent roll bread :P
nomij in reply to buckminsterfullereneAug 19, 2010. 10:49 AM
Hey, great minds think alike! (though fools seldom differ...). I was in Monteal this past winter, and the McDonalds was selling a promotional pie, (like their apple pie). It was a smores pie, and was rather tastey! Pasty and marshmellow went well there! My motto is, Experiements with sugar rarely turn out bad! I'm rather excited to give this a try with my kids! Thanks again for sharing :D
SwimmingRox says: Aug 19, 2010. 9:31 AM
YUM! do you just eat it right off the stick?
buckminsterfullerene (author) in reply to SwimmingRoxAug 19, 2010. 9:58 AM
Sure! I personally like to rip bits off and eat them.

What a great instructable! Never occured to me to bake anything on a stick! I own a home in Lexington, about 10 miles from North Lake and have spent many summers at both lakes and campgrounds in the area. I want to ditto the comment on using local firewood, the blight of destructive larvae is unbelievable! The damage to old growth conifers on my property is devastating and very sad.I can LITERALLY hear them muching away day and night. Will certainly be using this method of baking in a day or 2!

What a great idea and instructable.. Thanks for sharing it with us.. Jax
chabias says: Aug 19, 2010. 6:31 AM
One thing that should be mentioned....make sure you use LOCAL firewood, meaning within 50 miles of where you are camping and be sure to burn ALL of the wood before you leave the campsite. NY State has laws on this now to prevent invasive species of insects that can destroy trees. Some of you may know about the Emerald Ash Borer beetle problem currently going on, but about 30 new invasive species are found EACH YEAR. Please help control this problem and save our trees!
buckminsterfullerene (author) in reply to chabiasAug 19, 2010. 7:08 AM
Yes! Great point to make. No invasive species for me. We always use wood that is bought local or at the campground
lucek in reply to buckminsterfullereneAug 19, 2010. 7:20 AM
The place I go camping there's always several fallen trees that you can use. Frankly it would be nuts for me to hike in with wood. I'm already bringing 2.5 gallons of water and 50lb of gear. But along this line people in the north east look out for the Asian longhorned beetle.
lucek says: Aug 19, 2010. 7:13 AM
You have to post this now. I could have used this about 2 months ago.
