When you see a snake, stand perfectly still. if your in a group yell "Snake" and get everyone to stand dead still. running and jumping like a wimp gets the snakes aggressive.
And yes this method works. I have had a few encounters with Taipan's, one with a fierce snake and hundreds of other random snakes and standing still is the best method. they just cruise past and dont really care.

another good thing to do is learn to identify the snakes of your region. so you can identify the snake you see, learn its aggressiveness and if you get bitten you can tell poison control what it was so you get the correct anti venom.
