Introduction: Cardboard Crab Costume

Picture of Cardboard Crab Costume

This is a school project.

I must design and develop a cardboard, slot-constructed, marine-themed Halloween costume.

The costume must accommodate costumers that are 11-14 years old.  The costume must be slot-constructed.

The costume must use only recycled cardboard as the material.  The costume must be durable.  The costumer must be able to hold a bag, reach and ring a doorbell, access any material within the bag, and walk comfortably.

Step 1: Material List

Cardboard (two claws) 3' x 6",3' x 6"

Cardboard (body) 3 1/2' x 4'

Step 2: Body

Picture of Body

1. Using tape measure (T1), measure a 3 1/2' x 4' rectangle, supplied with cardboard (S1).
2. Using pencil (T4) and triangle (T6), draw the dimensions on the cardboard (S1).
3. Using utility knife (T2) and cutting mat (T1), cut out the dimensions of the cardboard (S1).
4. Using pencil (T4) on the 4' side, measure every 1' and draw a tick mark every 1'.
5. Using tape measure (T3), measure in from the right side 1', 3 " and draw a tick mark with pencil (T4).
6. From the tick mark, to the left, using the circle template (T5) and pencil (T4), draw a circle with a diameter of 12".
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Using utility knife (T2), cut out each circle.
9. Using tape measure (T3) and pencil (T4), measure and draw a 3' line 6" into the top-right corner of the cardboard.
10. Using utility knife (T2), cut a slit where the 3' line is drawn.
11. Using tape measure (T3) and pencil (T4), draw a 6" x 6" square in the top-left corner.
12. Repeat step 10 on the bottom-left corner.
13. Measure 3" to the left from the 3' slit with tape measure (T3).
14. Using pencil (T4), draw a 6" line to the left.
15. Repeat step 14 on the bottom, left, and right.

Step 3: Right Claw

1. Using tape measure (T1), measure a 3' x 6" rectangle, supplied with cardboard (S1).
2. Using pencil (T4) and triangle (T6), draw the dimensions on the cardboard (S1).
3. Using utility knife (T2) and cutting mat (T1), cut out the dimensions of the cardboard (S1).
4. Using tape measure (T3) and pencil (T4), measure and mark the halfway point on the 6" side.
5. Using pencil (T4) and triangle (T6), draw a line for 12" from the mid point to the right side of the rectangle. The line should reach the edge of the cardboard.
6. Using pencil (T4) and triangle (T6), draw a line for 12" from the mid point to the left side of the rectangle. The line should reach the edge of the cardboard.
7. Repeat steps 4-7 on the other side.

Step 4: Left Claw

Picture of Left Claw

The line should reach the edge of the cardboard.\
7. Repeat steps 4-7 on the other side.

Step 5: Parts List

The following is a list of all the parts being made:

P1 Body (Quantity - 1)
P2 Right Claw (Quantity - 2)
P3 Left Claw (Quantity - 3)

Step 6: Assembly 1

Picture of Assembly 1

Fold the body (P1) on the tick marks and insert the short side into the 3' slit.

Step 7: Assembly 2

Picture of Assembly 2

Slide the right claw (P2) into the right slits.

Step 8: Assembly 3

Picture of Assembly 3

Slide the left claw (P3) into the left slits.

Step 9: (Optional Painting Red)

This costume was part of a line of costumes with the them "Red Marine Objects".  Painting the costume red is an option.  Paint BOTH SIDES of the body and two claws to prevent curling.
