This guide will teach you how to make a viking helmet out of nothing but duct tape and cardboard (and some other stuff). I made this for the Make to Learn contest so here are the questions:

What did you make?
I made a viking helmet! This is actually my second try at a viking helmet, the first one is the bottom picture. After a while, the first one started falling apart and I recently realized how I could've prevented that...cardboard of course!
How did you make it?
I made the first one because I wanted to represent my viking heritage and it looked funny with a beard hat. I made the second one because I really liked the first one. The only person that helped me was my mom, I can't tie balloons...pathetic, right?
Where did you make it?
I made the helmet at home. I don't do these types of projects at school cause people look at me funny.
What did you learn?
I learned how to make the helmet a lot stronger than the previous one. I also learned how to sculpt with newspaper and masking tape. It was mentioned briefly in seamster's Duct Tape Batman Mask instructable, but he didn't really tell how to do it. I figured it out as I went along. If I had to do this project again, I would add more length to it so it would fit my head better.

For this project, you will need the following:
Single-ply corrugated cardboard
Brown, "cookie", and gray duct tape (or whatever colors you want, its your helmet)
Balloon
Measuring tape
Newspaper
Normal tape
Scissors
and Hot glue

Step 1: Measuring

First, measure your head. Now make a thin strip of non-sticky duct tape the same length. I encountered some smallness issues so you might want to add on an inch or so.

Now take the strip and tape the ends together. If its right, the strip should fit around your head like a headband.

Step 2: Choosing Your Victim

Now, choose the unfortunate balloon with which to build on. Blow it up inside the "headband" so that it'll be nice and tight. However, don't blow it up so tight that the balloon pops.

Step 3:

Now, put tape sticky side up all over the helmet area. At first, I tried to stick the pieces underneath the "headband" but that took too long so I wrapped a piece sticky side up around the "headband". Try to not let many air bubbles form.

Step 4:

If you are reading this step, than you have completed that long boring work and you're ready for some more long boring work. Cut out a bunch of cardboard triangles like that one. How many you need depends on the size of your head, lets just say I was cutting for a while. Put the triangles all around the sticky hat like so.

Step 5:

Congratulations! You have struggled through all that cardboard cutting! You ready for some more mindless taping??
Cover the whole helmet with the color you have chosen for the helmet. Once you have completed that, it's time to pop the balloon. If you came to this page to make half of a coconut or a bad haircut, stop here. Those who want to make a viking helmet, continue on to step 6.

Step 6:

Do any trimming you need to do and tape put the ends. Once you're done with that, get out the newspaper! I made the horns by bending tubes of newspaper and adding wads to fill in the creases. Your horns don't have to look like mine, after all, it's your helmet.
Once they're built, cover them in the tape of your choosing.

Step 7:

Glue AND tape the horns onto your helmet. Then add some detail.

Step 8:

Now you have your very own viking helmet! Now get out there and raid and pillage!!!

On second thought, don't. They'll arrest you.
