Introduction: Casting a Cement Honey Bear

Picture of Casting a Cement Honey Bear

I was playing with some Chang Shapecrete the other day. I mixed up a bit more than I needed and I was looking for something quick to do with it before it set up. I made a concrete honey bear.

Step 1: Casting the Bear

I pulled this empty honey bear out of the recycling bin. I rinsed it out and filled it up with pourable concrete. I tapped the plastic jar on the bench top to free any trapped air bubbles, wrapped it loosely in plastic and set it aside to harden.

Step 2: Removing the Mold

When the cement was hard I used a razor knife to slit open the plastic. I used the knife and a pair of locking pliers to remove the plastic jar. The cement was amazingly smooth and shiny.

Step 3: Finishing the Head

The head looked a bit weird on top. I used an old back saw to cut off the excess cement and then sanded the top of the bears head smooth with sandpaper.

Step 4: Painting the Bear

I painted the bear with Rustoleum khaki, then nutmeg and finally a misting of kona brown around the face. I used paint pens to add a face and the text on his chest.

Badly painted bear? Check. Horrible double-whammy pun? You bet. This would be right at home on the galley shelf of any Air Stream in the land.

I just checked out the ShapeCrete website and man oh man they have b-e-a-u-t-I-f-u-l- projects there.....thinking Christmas gift.

Lol, I got to this project from staring at my now empty honey bear bottle and turned to Instructables to see what the crafty pop had come up with. THANK YOU INSTRUCTABLES!!! You never fail to impress and stir my creative juices.

I really like this simple and straightforward instructable. The bear came out really nice. I think i will make one but im thinking of trying some chalkboard paint on the sign/belly

The cast is actually cuter than the original bottle. Cool!
