Introduction: Cell Phone Pouch

I set out to create a small container for my phone after finding poly vinyl in the remnants section of my fabric store.  Incorporating a little know-how, I now have a waterproof pouch to hold a few cards (like my ID and a credit card) and my phone.

I had fun making this, and it will take you less than an hour on a standard sewing machine. Good luck!

I made this at TechShop!

Step 1: Gather Materials

- Ruler
- Thread: This is not pictured, but I used an all purpose white.
- Fabric: I took the dimensions of my phone with the case on (height, length, and depth) and then cut out fabric pieces according to this equation:
width of fabric = twice the width of my phone + twice the depth of my phone + 1"
length of fabric = length of my phone + 1"
My pieces ended up being 6"x6".
Dimensions of the strap: 2"x6"
- Rotary cutter (or shears)
- Duct tape
- Pins
- Standard sewing machine

Step 2: Hem the Top of the Pouch

Depending on the weight of the outside fabric, you may need to duct tape the fold down. I could have pinned, but it did not stay in place very well so I chose to use duct tape.  Poly vinyl should not be ironed. Straight stitch inside the duct tape.

Step 3: Make the Strap

Hem the top of the strip of fabric as in the last step.

Fold in half of the length of the fabric and tape it down.  Stitch inside the tape.  Repeat for the other side.

Step 4: Attach the Strap to the Larger Piece

Duct tape the non-hemmed side of the strap to the inside of the large piece of fabric (be sure to have the nicer side of the strap facing out!).  Straight stitch close to the edge and trim the excess fabric.

Step 5: Sew the Interior

Fold the piece in half (along the hemmed side).  Pin the sides together that are "free" (not on the fold and not hemmed). Straight stitch around these two sides.

Cut a small hole on the longer side that you just stitched close to the hemmed edge (the top of the finished pouch).  Make the hole a size in which the strap can comfortably fit.

Step 6: Stitch a Flat Bottom

Put your phone in the inside out pouch with the bottom of the phone perpendicular to the bottom stitch (see picture).  Pinch the fabric to fit snugly around the phone and mark where this pinching ends on both sides.  These marks should make two triangles on each side of the phone.  Take your phone out and stitch these marks.  The more parallel the stitches, the better the bottom will look in your finished product.

Cut the excess fabric on the outside of the stitches.

Step 7: Finish

Flip the pouch inside out and enjoy your cell phone pouch!
