Cellphone operated Robot

 by Nitin Sharma
robot.jpg
Conventionally, Wireless-controlled robots use rf circuits, which have the drawbacks of limited working range, limited frequency range and the limited control. Use of a mobile phone for robotic control can overcome these limitations. It provides the advantage of robust control, working range as large as the coverage area of the service provider, no interference with other controllers and up to twelve controlles.
Although the appearance and the capabilities of robots vary vastly, all robots share the feature of a mechanical, movable structure under some form of control. The Control of robot involves three distinct phases: perception, processing and action. Generally, the preceptors are sensors mounted on the robot , processing is done by the on-board microcontroller or processor, and the task is perfomed using motors or with some other actuators.

i want to make it clear, if you face any problem i am dere for you

Step 1: PROJECT OVERVIEW

blockdiagram.jpg
dtmf.jpg
In this project the robot, is controlled by a mobile phone that makes call to the mobile phone attached to the robot in the course of the call, if any button is pressed control corresponding to the button pressed is heard at the other end of the call. This tone is called dual tone multi frequency tome (DTMF) robot receives this DTMF tone with the help of phone stacked in the robot
The received tone is processed by the atmega16 microcontroller with the help of DTMF decoder MT8870 the decoder decodes the DTMF tone in to its equivalent binary digit and this binary number is send to the microcontroller, the microcontroller is preprogrammed to take a decision for any give input and outputs its decision to motor drivers in order to drive the motors for forward or backward motion or a turn.
The mobile that makes a call to the mobile phone stacked in the robot acts as a remote. So this simple robotic project does not require the construction ofreceiver and transmitter units.
DTMF signaling is used for telephone signaling over the line in the voice frequency band to the call switching center. The version of DTMF used for telephone dialing is known as touch tone.
DTMF assigns a specific frequency (consisting of two separate tones) to each key s that it can easily be identified by the electronic circuit. The signal generated by the DTMF encoder is the direct al-gebric submission, in real time of the amplitudes of two sine(cosine) waves of different frequencies, i.e. ,pressing 5 will send a tone made by adding 1336hz and 770hz to the other end of the mobile. The tones and assignments in a dtmf system shown below

hiiiii.....

i am working on this same project......

i use ATMEGA16 controller ic.

my problem is that the controller's port-D is connected to motor driver ic-L293D. But i don't get the output from port-D thus i don't give the output signal to both DC motors. So what is problem in my circuit??????

please give me some answer as possible........

Dummy motors
Mob025.jpg
RoboLabz in reply to sivaprasad.ecemitsMay 16, 2009. 12:12 PM
Use two motors with two wheels at back side and use two dummy motors to connect the front wheels or better to use a castor wheel like i have used in my project. You can get dummy motors from your old scrap of geared motors remove the motor and gears from that and use the shaft only. To connect the TIP and RING of the earpiece remove the speaker from its case and solder two wires from the speaker connections. If not worked change the polarity and then try again and if again not work remove the speaker and solder the wires directly to the speaker wire and use it NOTE you have to remove the enamel coating of speaker wire by heating it then solder it and taped it.

Hi, This is a cool project to work upon....well just had 1 question, can we use ATMEL's AT89c51 microcontroller instead of IC2. If yes then what all changes will have to be made in the circuit?
RoboLabz in reply to harshb_delhiMay 5, 2009. 10:42 AM
you can change the microcontroller with any other microcontroller likewise I used ATMega8. The format of program will change according to the ports you will used. but the given circuit diagram will affect your microcontroller and DTMF decoder because nitin had not used any voltage regulator so use 7805 in the circuit diagram

I have also made the same project but use a voltage regulator in place of the diode which makes conform that the logic supplies for the micro controller and DTMF decoder remains within 5V not in 6.1V when a 6V battery is full charged

yatishdevadiga in reply to mohsin_khan22Mar 28, 2009. 3:09 PM
i have also taken this as my T.E. E&TC project a headset has two wires - one for left ear and other for right ear cut the ear plugs and strip the wires you will find two wires coming out of each ear one is the tip part and the other wire is for ground. ground of both the ear's is common. you can check the continuity by DMM.the connector is divided into 3 parts. frontmost point is the TIP point and end most point is the ground. place one end of DMM on the TIP point and check the continuity with the stripped wires.the wire for which you will get the continuity with the tip point connect it to the TIP part of the circuit and the one with continuty for ground connect it to the RING part of the circuit.

Go for NOKIA 1100, it does send DTMF and also have auto answering mode. All mobile phones send DTMF, but you have to do some internal settings in expensive phones like N-series etc. But NOKIA 1100 will work perfect.

you could even theoretically use a small bluetooth headset in place of the phone and keep in range and you could use the cellphone to which the bluetooth headset is linked as a remote. Because when you press the buttons on your cellphone you hear the dtmf tone as well so it would work both ways. This would be a very cheap alternative to some of the bluetooth controlled cars i have seen.
Nitin Sharma (author) in reply to vinnygx3pimpDec 10, 2008. 7:34 PM
u mean, connecting the bluetooth with rover ?? if you meant the same we can't use bluetooth, becauz after that the range for controlling the robot will get limited. In the case when u use two cellphones, you can control the robot all over the world also connecting bluetooth with the rover is a tough job, i'll have to break my bluetooth an in 'India' u can get a cheap phn for the price of a new bluetooth headset.

i know but you would just connect the bluetooth headset speaker as you do with the phone just wired in. and it would only be used for short range. as with the camera posted in a previous comment. you could use a phone with video calling and just open the phone and adjust the video call camera to face forward

ya, u can do that

I want to know if I need a specific model of phone or using whatever it's going to work.
Nitin Sharma (author) in reply to BurzredionDec 11, 2008. 1:06 AM
u can use any phone. but make sure that the phn u r using is having autoanswer mode. becauz if it will nt have autoanswer mode then u have to manualy pic the phone. and to decrease the complexity , use a phone which has a handsfree connecting port as the one which is shown in the instructable (i have recently added it, check it out). becauz in thoese handsfree ports it is easier to identify "tip" and "ring"

if u r using this rover in India u have to reset it few times (but not frequently) it is basiclly due to network disturbances. and i have uploaded the main circuit in the instructables and the DTMF circuit can be viewed clearly

This is a great project, but like the below comment, I had a hard time reading it. You should go back and try to make your grammar better, and then it would be a GREAT instructable. Also, you should try to take better pictures.

Nice instructable, how about using a video call phone and you could get live video feedback as well ;)
Nitin Sharma (author) in reply to daniel2008Dec 8, 2008. 7:21 PM
i am still working on it there are ways like bluetooth, wifi, radiofreq for transmitting vedios. but i am working on, vedios transmitted from the bluetooth to the same phone which is used to control the robot

The robot looks great, but your writing needs some changes. The "text speak" (using "u" instead of "you", "frnds", "phn" etc.) is unnecessary, you have as much space to write as you want so it just makes your text harder to read. Capitals and punctuation would help as well. It also makes the introduction stand out as not your own writing- copying is frowned upon but in this case I can find that exact phrasing in a lot of other places online anyway. Overall this looks like it could be a great Instructable but it's let down by the writing.
