Step 1: Choosing your Photo

kate.jpg
This is just a picture off the internet that i used.

When choosing a photo you must remember two things.

1: Pick a picture with the least amount stray hairs. The picture i picked does have stray hairs, but there close to her head so it doesn't matter as much.

2: The other thing you should keep in mind is to pick someone that has light hair ex.blonde. I think darker hair will work but not as good.

This is great! So simple yet briliant outcome! This is surely worth 5*, not a common rating I give :P

IF you add an adjustment layer and use the mask you made you can change the hair to a different color easily. Non destructive editing....
misprecious says: Sep 10, 2009. 1:32 AM
i also use this method but i think my way is much simpler. 1.open the picture 2.make a new layer 3.paint the hair on the layer white 4.on the layer select soft light 5.then go to image, adjustments, hue/saturation(ctrl-U) 6.click colourize then choose the colour you want. voila

What I do (in gimp) is just select the hair and change the hue/ saturation.
REA in reply to watermelonheadJul 29, 2009. 7:21 PM
yes. keep in mind that the lighter the hair colour, the "odder" it will look. my advice is change each hue one at a time rather than just the master hue.

LAWL! The raidoactive hair damaged his brain, obviously :D
REA in reply to watermelonheadJul 30, 2009. 2:16 PM
that would explain why it looks as though hes doing something explicit to the guitar.
watermelonhead in reply to REAJul 30, 2009. 2:19 PM
No, not explicit. He's just tasting it.

aussie457 says: Jul 30, 2009. 5:57 PM
this helped a lot, I've been trying to figure out how to quickmask forever and this is the only thing I've seen that actually gave the shortcut, thanks a ton
Ward_Nox says: Jul 28, 2009. 8:08 PM
I Used to do this all the time i even took it a step further and discolored a fur coat to make it grey
whitepinoy says: Jul 28, 2009. 6:51 PM
The way i have learned to do it is by using an added layer and in the Mode you are going to choose color and paint that layer with the desired color only in the desired area. This will leave all pixel data about the original picture unchanged and only the overlay with any added data.

This works great on cars also. Instead of soft light, try Color Burn for cars. Nice Ible!
Brandon555 (author) in reply to Dorkfish92Apr 23, 2009. 4:57 PM
Its a good way to find a colour that would look good on your car before you spend thousands on a paint job ;)
Chromatica in reply to Brandon555Jul 28, 2009. 3:52 PM

benthekahn in reply to ChromaticaJul 28, 2009. 5:11 PM

great work and very helpful
burzvingion says: Apr 3, 2008. 11:14 AM
Another option is to use the "Replace Color" dialog (Image -> Adjustments -> Replace Color), although this works best when the hair and skin don't have similar hues.
Brandon555 (author) says: Apr 2, 2008. 6:37 PM
Cool, Some times you gotta play around with the overlaying options until you find something that works. Thanks for the comments
JakeTobak says: Apr 2, 2008. 6:21 PM
You can do the same thing when coloring drawings. My friend is insane at drawing so one time I scanned a couple and colored them in with Photoshop. I think I might have used 'Multiply' as the overlay though.
GorillazMiko says: Apr 2, 2008. 2:59 PM
Awesome! That looks so real, great job, I need to get better at Photoshop. :P
