A few common reasons for Charley horses are dehydration, magnesium and/or potassium deficiency, over exertion by exercising, and some medications. I remember when I was pregnant I used to get them and it was because I was low in calcium. Unfortunately I did not know it at the time. When we are experiencing a Charley horse we drink more water, less caffeinated drinks, and take some magnesium or potassium. Well, I take the supplements hubby does not like to take pills.
The secret is simple. We take 1 or 2 Tablespoons of vinegar everyday or eat a pickle. If we are having a Charley horse we take 1 or 2 Tablespoons at the time it is happening or eat a pickle. I do not know why it works but people get relief very soon after taking it or within 20 minutes. I just recently learned that natural vinegar with the mother it; is loaded with vitamins and minerals which in my opinion are much cheaper than buying vitamins. I will be trying this type of vinegar and will give an update when I do.
There are a lot of vitamins and minerals available over the counter that can't be digested very well because of the added ingredients. They just pass through your system. It is best to read the labels to see what has been added. I buy mine from a health food store but still read the label. It makes since to me a natural vinegar being a liquid form; would digest easily allowing the body to receive the benefits.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you find this instructable beneficial.

Whole grain bread, almonds, and cashews are also great for magnesium, while orange juice, potatoes, bananas, and dates have good amounts of potassium.
A quick way for relieving a muscle cramp in the moment is a type of stretch called reciprocal inhibition. Athletes are often instructed to do this to release a painful muscle cramp. They contract the muscle that acts in the opposite direction as the cramping muscle, which lengthens the cramping one. This can be even more effective when another person gently assists the stretch, allowing a "hold-relax" stretch with opposing muscle contraction. This link has decent instructions: http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/pnfstretching.html and they're close to the techniques I was taught in the sports massage unit at massage school.

I love vinegar, daily I take some mililiters with the salad or other foods.
I'm sure I'm not the only one here who had never heard of a Charlie Horse.
