This is how I use my own talking chatbots to make standard talking toys and gadgets from the toystore speak endangered, dead, and science fiction languages with me.

This instructable will show you how to make a talking deer head from 'gemmy' to be controlled by any chatbot.

Step 1: Requirements

You need the following:

1. Any Computer with Keyboard, Speaker, and Aux. input.
2. A Talking Chatbot.
3. Any Animatronic/Robotic Talking Head or Gadget that has an aux. jack. If it also lipsyncs, that can be even more fun (or a nnoying).

4. Hammer, Nails, Solid Wall above your computer, to hang your Talking Deer Head on. I removed the horns from my talking Buck, as shown below.

5. Electrical Outlet close to where you will be hanging Buck.

6. A pack of your favorite Bubble Gum. It helps me to think and can come in handy for quickly hanging things on the wall and such.

7. Some friends that will cheer you and your chatbot on. This is much more fun if someone is around to see you gleefully giggling with your new animatronics buddy.

Step 2: Start Your ChatBot

Fire up your chatbot and make sure you can hear its responses.

AliceBot.org provides one of my personal favorites; ProgramD. ProgramD lets you run your own chatbots on your own web server. If you want some simple TTS codes for your chatbots webpage, you can find some in the book titled: Build Your Own Army of Web Bots within 24 Hours by Monica Lamb.

Once your chatbot is running and you have verified that it is responding to you with Text to Speech responses, it is time for you to plug in your animatronics. You should be able to HEAR your chatbots responses.

Step 3: Hang Up Your Talking Deer Head

Hang up your talking trophy buck and make sure it is working correctly.

Pull Buck out of its Box. I removed my Buck's Horns, because my chatbot in this demo has a Mohawk Language Female Voice and Buck does care about his image. My husband argued for Buck, stating that any respectable Buck would not appreciate being looked upon as a femme Buck or a femme bot. I do not wish to disrespect my plastic Buck friend, so mine is now a respectable Mohawk talking Doe. Perhaps I will add some lipstick to complete the transformation.

Hammer a nail into the wall where you wish to hang Buck.
Be sure there is an electrical outlet close to where you hang Buck.

Hang Buck on your Wall and Plug him into the electrical outlet.
Use the microphone that comes with Buck to test him out and have some fun.

Step 4: Connect Buck to Your Talking ChatBot

A long aux. wire is included with Buck. Both ends of this cord are the same and look like the photo below.

Plug one end of the wire into the Aux. on the right side of Buck.

Plug the other end of the wire into the Aux. outlet in your pc. It is usually outlined with Green.

Use your computer and say hello to your chatbot from its webpage.
Voila, Buck should be lip synching, talking, and moving as your chatbot responds with speech, to your text input.

If you are anything like me, you are now giggling with glee as you have a meaningful conversation with Buck about his friends in the forest.

Step 5: TroubleShooting

If your Buck, animatronic, robot, talking toy is not lip synching or moving with your Chatbot's responses, do the following:

• Check to make sure that the Aux. wire is plugged into the correct outlet in your PC

• Check to make sure the Aux. wire is plugged into the Aux. at the side of Buck.

• Make sure you can HEAR the responses coming from your chatbot on your pc. If you can not hear anything, it is likely that Buck is not 'hearing' anything either.

• Final Resort; send me an email.

What kind of microphone will work with the talking deer? I bought one used without a mic, and I have tried two that do not work in the AUX jack.
I like it, but I wonder if there is any way to talk to it and have it talk back. I'm not really sure how hard that would be. I've never messed around with speech recognition. And it would be super-cool if there was some way of running the chatbot off of a micro controller that was also able to do speech recognition and it was all hooked to a speech chip. That way you can have a self-contained talking/listening/conversing deer head that you can hang anywhere; computer or not. Oh the possibilities.
you do text chat or voice chat with the chatbot using your communication device. my chatbot responds with text, video, audio, graphics and more. my chatbot sends responses that work for any device (toys, computer, cell phone, animatronic, smart home systems, etc). computers, talking toys, etc do have speech chips and microcontrollers, that's how they respond to input (text, voice) the chatbots that I develop provide all that you mention here and much more :)

Pretty cool! I tried the Dougy, Talking Douglas Fir hack without the AUX jack. All I ended up after sitting there over the course of one year was a corner full of wires, and frustration. Much easier with the jack input. Have you tried using a recording chip?
A recording chip provides limited audio. Plugging into my chatbot provides Unlimited translations, audio, and conversations about absolutely any topic at any time.

REALLY needs a video .... this is SO cool, I didn't know they made those with AUX jacks, I remember a couple guys hacking a billy bass to use with a linux system .... definately voice-recognition software would be cool, like the type on some LG cell-phones. 'User Independant Voice Recognition' ....
