Here is my first instructable... Sorry if my english is not very good because i´m from Argentina. And sorry if the quality of the photos is not good, that's because i have taken it with a phone...
I have done this TATTOO MACHINE a few weeks ago and works exellent, be careful to do every step well.

First, what is a tattoo machine?

A tattoo machine is a hand-held device generally used to create a tattoo, a permanent marking of the skin with indelible ink. Modern tattoo machines use electromagnetic coils to move an armature bar up and down, Connected to said armature bar is a barred needle grouping that pushes ink into the skin. Tattoo artists generally use the term "machine", or even "iron", to refer to their equipment. The word "gun" is often used but is looked down upon by professional artists. (From Wikipedia)

Have you / do you intend to mutilate yourself with this?

Getting a tattoo is not mutilation.....

But this home made tattoo gun is not the ideal way to do a tattoo. You'll only end up regretting it and having to get it covered with a bigger tattoo.

My OED defines "mutilate" as; remove limb, destroy use of the same, and imperfect by excision or some act of destruction.
That is what we both expect from a machine like this I think.

While this will work for tattooing, I find these types of devices to be better for engraving names/images/etc into metal or wood.

all you really need to do is replace the "needle" with a tougher and/or bigger tip
you can engrave your name into anything very nicely if you make your tool well enough.

Interesting build, I'd like to see the results from the hands of a competent artist.
