Step 1: Stuff You Will Need

Picture of Stuff You Will Need
Tools - Some of this stuff you may not need and you might have to make adjustments in the drill bit size for your camera / tripod.

  • Drill / driver
  • 1/4 drill bit
  • 3/16 drill bit
  • Vice or some way to bend the shelf brace
  • Hammer
  • Screw driver
  • Pliers

Materials

  • Cheap iPhone case - my wife found this one at the Dollar Tree for (yep) a dollar!
  • Shelf bracket
  • Bolt for tapped hole and nut
  • Two washers
  • Some duct tape (what's an Instructable without duct tape)

Stuff you should already have

  • iPhone
  • Video or photo camera
  • Tripod

Step 2: Measure and Drill

My shelf bracket had a weird piece on the end, but it was easy enough to get rid of with the help of the trusty hammer.

You need to make 3 holes in the shelf bracket. Two are for placing the bracket between the camera and tripod. One to mount the cheap iPhone case.

Measure out the 2 holes on the tripod. Notice one is larger than the other. Drill the two holes in the skinny end of the bracket (as shown in the picture).

Drill another hole in the wide end of the bracket for the iPhone case (as shown in the picture).

Step 3: Bend the Bracket and Mount the Case

Mark where you want to bend the bracket. You will want to make sure that the case has plenty of room to swivel from side to side. Test this a few times before you make the bend!

Once you bent it (I used a vice to get a clean bend), it is time to mount the case. Simply drill a hole in the case, push the screw through the case and washers in this order:

Bolt ==> case - washer - bracket - washer - nut

Tighten it down enough to make the bolt be somewhat flush with the inside of the case, but loose enough that it can still turn pretty easily. Don't get it too loose or it will not hold itself in position.

You probably want to put some tape over the bolt so it does not scratch up the back of your iPhone.

Step 4: Bolt Onto Tripod and Enjoy

Place the bracket over the holes in the tripod. Then place the camera on the bracket and tighten it to the tripod.

Done! Now you can enjoy a steady(er) iPhone video shoot.

Not to put a hammer in this persons idea, but if the phone is jailbroken then you can screen capture video footage of whats on going in the phone on the desktop of a computer. i put a simple video together that demonstrates this here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYaBI6KLmAQ

It looks pretty unstable, especially if you bumped the phone and made the metal bracket oscillate up and down. I would just put it on a wooden table and mount the camera overhead. Unfortunately I can't try this because I don't have an iphone, and we all know that any software or accessories for the iphone can't ever possibly be adapted for other phones/PDAs :P
